Western Australia Advised To Raise Horses for Export
BUNBURY W. Aust.—lt is many years since a horse boat visited this port and consequently much interest attached to the unexpected call for coai of the steamer Querimba, en route from Port Adelaide to Indian ports, with 330 horses and a further 330 horses loaded at Melbourne. The owner of the consignment is J. A. Robb. Mr Robb has been engaged in the horse business for' upward of 40 years, and throughout that timo has made an annual voyage to Indian ports with a cargo. This year he had a second consignment, booked to leave Port Adelaide. While remount animals predominated, the consignment aboard the Querimba included polo ponies and race horses. Several winners of recent races were being sent to Indian stables. Mr Robb said that Western Australia was missing an opportunity by not undertaking the breeding of horses for export. The. demand in overseas markets warranted a strong effort being made to develop breeding here on a large scale, Mr Robb believes. On hi 3 own property in South Australia Mr Robb carries about 3000 head of cattle, but regards the horse market as much more profitable. He urged Western Australian breeders to investigate for themselves the possibility of opening up a remunerative trade with India.
