Absolute Control of Water Race
WAIPAWA COUNTY COUNCIL DISCUSSION. From Our Own Correspondent WAIPUKURAU, March 8. “I want to make it perfectly clear that the Waipawa County Council has absolute control of the Argyll Water Race, and that no one has any right to make any alterations whatsoever to tho main race without permission of tho council,” said Mr. N. M. Paulsen, chairman of the Waipawa County Council, at the meeting of the council this morning.
This statement was made by Mr. Paulsen during the discussion of a letter from Air. L Alay asking the council to authorise the replacement of a water ram in the Argyll rater race which he, Air. May, had made without knowing that permission had first to be obtained.
The engineer explained that he previous owner of the property before Mr, Alay had had two windmills xnd a ram working from the race, and Mr. May had replaced these by a ram.
The chairman said that the council was unable to say whether the previous occupier had been granted permission to take water from the race or not. Under the circumstances he thought the council tbould grant Mr. May permission to go on using the appliances, subject to the by-laws under which the council could cut off the supply at any time if it found it desirable to do so. Permission was granted to Mr. May.
The water supply by-laws show that any person commiting this offence if liable to fine not exceeding £2O and additional fine of £lO a day for thi period during which such appliances | were in use.
