Scuffles in a Hospital

WHEN MEN CAME TO REMOVE FURNITURE There was a scrimmage at the National Hosiptal for Dentures, Hugh street, Pimlico, England, recently between the staff and men from a furniture firm, who took away furniture which was later returned. Mr Leopold E. Cannon, chairman oi the hosiptal committee later stated: “Eight men arrived with a furniture van. They went into a waiting room and were thought to be patients waiting for treatment. “They entered the board room and removed some chairs, which they took to their van. “There was a slight scrimmage, and the police were sent for. Peace has not been made. Representatives of the furniture firm are sleeping at the hospital at night. Members of the staff are in the next room. '"ho heroine of the episode, Miss Catharine Day, superintendent of the hospital, told the story to a Daily Sketch reporter. “A number of hefty men called at the hosiptal and demanded to remove the furniture, one ot them made his way from the chairman’s room to the top floor, where two typists were engaged. These typists, Mrs Levcn and Miss Terry, barred his way and despite his persistence succeeded in bolting the door on the inside and preventing him from entering. Air Macdonald, the Secretary of the hospital, said they are about three months in arrears with payments on tho furniture. The hospital was opened in 1935 for providing free dentures to the poor, and has several centres in the provinces.
