Plunket Shield Matches

Canterbury’s Big Lead In Plunket Shield MOLONEY’S TINE INNINGS. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The wicket was easy paced for the continuation of the Plunket Shield match, Wellington v. Canterbury, today. Canterbury went for runs regardless of cost and raised their overnight score of 308 for two to 430 for six wickets. Cromb then declared. Wellington lost two wickets cheaply and then went on to score 194 runs for three wickets. After a disastrous start in the second innings in which two wickets fell for 15 runs Wellington now has an outside chance of confining Canterbury to a first innings win. Continuing his splendid innings of 192 not out Hadlee added only two more runs before he went leg before wicket to Parsloe. He made no attempt to play the ball with the bat, but brought his legs across to guard his wicket apparently thinking the ball would swing away to the off. However, the ball broke back towards the leg and the batsman was given out. 321 —3 —194. Hadlee’s total had been made in 255 minutes and included 21 fours and one six. Kerr joined Bellamy who continued to score with strokes just backward of point. Kerr began slowly and then proceeded to force or cut the fast bowlers. He also swung Trieklebank to leg for four. Bellamy, who had batted gracefully, was at length badly beaten by Trieklebank. 345—4—42.

Cromb joined Kerr and both went for runs. Kerr in trying to drive Parsloe failed to get over the ball and tho catch was well held by Griffiths at cover. 353 —5—16.

O'Brien, the incomer, was rather less aggressive than Cromb and did not seem completely at ease. Blundell took over the bowling from Trieklebank and Parsloe sent down one more over before Griffiths came on. Each batsman in turn gave a hard but difficult chance off Griffiths. The last ball of the over Cromb hooked high over the head of mid-wicket. Tindill reached the ball and saved a boundary but injured himself slightly against the pickets. Four hundred came up after 355 minutes’ play. O’Brien was out when he returned a simple catch to Lamason off Griffiths. 419—6—28.

Roberts joined his captain and quickly scored 9 runs. The total at lunch was 430 for six wickets and Cromb declared.

Roberts and Mulcock took up the Canterbury attack against Tindill and Moloney. Tindill scored the first boundary by cover-driving Mulcock, but tried the same shot next ball and Hadlee held a splendid catch. 11 —I—6.

Parsloe was next but did not last long. He felt for one from Mulcock, but the ball was swinging away and the catch was held by Roberts at fine slip. 15 — 2 —2. Graham relieved Roberts and then Cromb took over. Off his fourth bail Jackman missed a hard chance on the leg side. Thirty came up after an hour and a-quarter of very slow scoring. Mulcock was relieved after he had bowled 17 overs and 12 maidens for two wickets at the cost of 11 runs. Bellamy, the ieft-hander, and Roberts were' tried before Mulcock came on again. At the tea adjournment Moloney was 42 and Ell 28 and the total 84 for two wickets. This partnership continued to withstand the attack which was never loose. Moloney gave his first chance when he returned a simple catch to Mulcock off his own bowling, but Mulcock failed to hold it. Moloney was ,missed again shortly afterwards, Bellamy failing to hold an on-drive oil Cromb. In turn catches were dropped by Cobden, fielding substitute for Page, and Bellamy. Moloney’s long and patient innings ended when he hit Gromb to Roberts at mid-off. Roberts fielded quickly, returned to Cromb and Moloney was run out. IS7—3—B.
