New Zealand Bowling Championships

13 SECURE FIVE WINS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The New Zealand Bowling Association’s annual championship tournament opened to-day with play in the singles. The 280 entrants were reduced to 77 and of these 13 with five wins, the possible, qualified with two lives for the post-section play to-morrow while 49 with four wins and 15 with three qualified with one life. There were not many unexpected results. Of the seven men who have won the singles in former years and are competing this year all qualified. M. Walker, three times champion, was beaten by S. Sutton (Hawera) who, however, had only two wins. J. D. Best, the 1925 champion, and W. Carswell, twice former champion, had five wins. Engebretsen, the 1935 champion, had a loss to T. Pollock, while F. Livingstone, last year’s champion, also had one loss to J. B. Jack (St. John’s) who failed to qualify. J. M. Brackenridge came through with four wins, being beaten by G. B. Evans and W. Foster. The former champion, qualified comfortably.
