Pohangina Valley

From Our Own Correspondent

Those who visited the Pohangina hall on A recent evening: were delightfully entertained for several hours by films screened by Major J. M. Brunt, a visitor to the valley from Capetown, South Africa. Several of the reels were filmed in the great Game Reserve, a tract of land in the Northern Transvaal covering 8000 square miles. Shooting of game in the reserve was prohibited in 1928. Lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, vildebesto and all kinds of smaller animals and birds were photographed in their natural surroundings. Motorists being allowed to drive through the reserve between the hourß of sunrise and sunset,, the only conditions being that they use sedan cars and keep the engines running, some splendid close-ups of the animals can be obtained. They appear to take little notice of motor-cars. Views of the marvellous Victoria Falls, on the Zambesi river, where the vast volume of water falls Into a rift 2000 feet in width and 400 feet deep and the railway bridge which spans the falls, considered one of the wonders of the world, were most interesting. Many splendid photographs of the Orange river at the awe-inspiring King George V cataract were shown, while views of Capetown and the surrounding districts taken from the top of Table Mountain were fascinating. A reel of coloured film showed the beautiful flowers and shrubs in the Botanical Gardens In ali their beauty. Mr. J. T. Moar. in thanking Major Brunt for the programme he had presented. explained that photography was Major Brunt’s hobby and he had gener- I cusly engaged the hail and screened the I films so that anyone desirous of seeing i something of a country outside New Zealand could do so. A hearty vote of thanks to Major Brunt was carried by * acclamation.
