Third place was occupied by E. H. Smith and Tantrum (Takaro), who defeated White and Wainwright (Patea) in the play off. Ramsay and Wenham were champions last year. Excellent playing conditions obtained when post-section play commenced yesterday at the Takaro and Northern greens, and the day remained ideal for bowling. The games were confined to 16 heads with the object of completing the tournament yesterday. Finishes were exceptionally close, tho games being decided in some cases on the last head 1 . Lee and McKee (Northern), undefeated in section play, lost their second round game after enjoying a bye in the first, but Smith and Tantrum (Takaro), the other.rink undefeated on the opening days, went to the semifinal before they were vanquished Results follow: First Round. Previously unbeaten throughout the tournament, E. H Smith and Tantrum (Takaro) were beaten by a margin of four points when they met Cuming and Goebel (Marton). After five heads the Takaro pair led S —4, but failed to score on the next six heads, so that their position became irretrievable. Wainwright lost largely on tactics, but the Feilding pair bowled with great accuracy. \\ ainwright took out kitty on one occasion when lying three, a:i unfortunate break. Final. Goebel 22 v. Wenham 13. The final was an excellent match, occupying two hours. Both pairs bowled for the most part with exact precision, but the tactics were orthodox aud victory was all but decided well be-

fore the last head. Goebel played lead and Cuming skipped, opening with a single. Wenham took a three and a single, but the Marton pair then won six heads in succession to establish a lead of S —4. Wenham notched two singles, but an accurate five by Cuming, giving a lead of 13—6, put a stranglehold on the game. On the fifteenth head the score was 16—10.

On the sixteenth Wenham secured a single after Ramsay drew the shot from Goebel, who had placed two touchers. The skips did not revise the position. Clever drawing by Goebel and Cuming

established a lead of four in the next head, and Wenham failed to take the kitty out, facing a deficit of 11 —20 as he proceeded to the 18th head, where he scored a single only. The nineteenth was again marked by accurate bowling, but there were no fireworks and Goebel took a single on a measure up. Feilding had the lie for two on the 20th, but Cuming cannoned one of his own bowls inside to be one up. Wenham, however, drove through successfully to kill the head, and on the replay notched an orthodox single. The game was virtually over, and a single to Marton on the ultimate head made the score

The play-off for third place resulted in a comfortable win for Tantrum, who beat Wainwright 20—10. Wainwright won eight heads, but of these all except one were singles, so that he could not keep pace with his opponent. Smith and Tantrum played with admirable consistency.

President of the Manawatu Bowling Centre, Mr. J. A. Nash, presented trophies to the placewinners, who were heartily cheered. Mr. Nash thanked the ladies, greenkeepers, and others who contributed to tho enjoyment of the tournament. The winning skips made acknowledgement.
