i . The lirst attempts to get “Winnie the Pooh”—the “Piling Plea” aeroplane constructed by Mr. E. It. Perkins —to take the air were «uade at the Waipukurau aerodrome on Saturday , and .Monday. Though the 'wheels rose , the tail skid clung to earth tenaciously, . the trouble being that the propeller was i too big. Instead of the required 4000 . revolutions per minute it* made only ; 2700. When a smaller propeller is fitted it is expected that the 'plane will rise without difficulty. A few minutes before midday yesterday a light truck driven by the owner, Mr. P. Berdebes, of Dannevirke, turned into Ward street from High street and continued the arc to mount the footpath . and strike the brick wall of Messrs. 1 Barraud and Abraham's buiiditg with ' considerable force. The vehicle had * been travelling down High street in a I northerly direction, the turn into Ward , street being a left-hand People ■ t assembled from all directions on i>jari ing the crash, but sll that remained to > bo done was to push the truck from » the footpath. The damage consisted ot * chipped bricks, a dented mudguard and 1 a bent front axle. A new motor-car iigured in an inci- ' dent at the Barraud-Waterloo street intersection on Monday. Fortunately there were no serious consequences. Another motor-car and a lorry were also involved in the occurrence, but the new one was the most conspicuous because of its brightness and the fact that it left the road. There were four passengers in it, three in the front seat. The lorry and the two cars met almost simultaneously on the crossing. The new car, in avoiding a collision, got on the wrong side of the road and in negotiating stationary cars opposite Mr. L. G. Harris' residence, swerved right across the road, on to the footpath and left much of its bright paint on the fences in its passage. It came to a stop against the fence, but the occupants pushed it into manoeuvring position again, and drove away without anyone having been injured. It is said that the exI citement caused was due to nonf observance of the rules of the road.
