Butter From Feilding’s Highlands
Away up under the shadows of the Ruahine mountain range lies the township of Rangiwahia which in 1925 suddenly sprang into fame through the outstanding quality of the butter produced in tho district. Here under conditions authoritatively asserted to be almost ideal for the manufacture of high-grade butter, is tho factory of the Rangiwa-hia-ltualiino Dairy Company which is responsible for the manufacture of the famous “Quail" brand which won the world’s championship in 1925. This distinction brought tho high quality of Feiiding district produce to the notice of the world. Since that date the little company has prospered and progressed and now is equipped with a new and modern factory which was opened in February last with all the ceremony such an event in the district’s history warranted. “Quail" butter was first manufactured in December, 1898—days when homo separation was not known. What were known as “skimming" stations were located for the convenience of suppliers of milk, at different points throughout tho district, until home separation revolutionised the dairying industry. The quality of the company’s product is revealed in the high test of the cream received which was 97.21 finest for tho past season when tho output wa3 250 tons. Tho average test for the exported produce was 94.761 which is only .11 behind the highest for the Dominion, and this' from the very high country so close to the Ruahine ranges. The maintenance of this high quality is largely due to tho insistence of the company that aLI cream is received and pasteurised before 10.30 each day, thus ensuring that only fresh raw material is used in the manufacture of “Quail" butter. With an additional bonus this month the pay-out tor the past season was just over 1/- per lb.
