Form at Woodville To-day Will be Guide for Christmas Racing

Splendid Acceptances Received and Racing Should be Good

Single-pool Betting System

The Woodville District Jockey Club’s summer meeting opons to-day and concludes on Saturday. The fields are good throughout and as tho form disclosed at this fixture is suro to throw much light on the prospects of horses engaged at tho Manawatu and other important Christmas meetings, tho two days’ racing at Woodvillo should attract widespread interest. Th o big course, regarded as one of tho best in the Dominion, is in perfect order, and the long straight will play its part in providing thrilling finishes, which aro always a feature of racing at Woodville. The betting will be conducted under tho single pool system, and the first race is timed to start at 12.15 p.m.

Following is a sliort review of the Helds: —

The programme will open with the Manga-atua Hurdles, over, a mile and a-half. There are nine acceptors and Lord Hereford, who beat Beau Gallante, Limulus and Beau Star on the second day of the Feilding meeting, is at the head of the weights. Lord Hereford has gone up lOlbs, but his Feilding win was decisive. Bluo Tiger is next. He has been off the scene for some time but he is a fine jumper and he has been schooling well at WoodviUe. Otauru King, with 9.31- in tho saddle,, won the Manakau Hack Hurdles at Levin, and Limulus and Miss Hushabye were in the minor places. Otauru King jumped particularly well and ho showed more speed than usual between fences. A repetition of his Levin form would make him very hard to beat to-day. Red Rufus, Taura Lad, Contract, Miss Hushabye and Tahoma all have fairly recent form, while County Willonyx cannot bo left out of calculations. It should ‘be a great race and if Lord Hereford is withdrawn in favour of his stablemate, Tahoma, the public may elect to go most solidly for Otauru King, Blue Tiger, Taura Lad. There are 23 acceptors for the Maiden Stakes and in the event of there being more than 19 starters, the race will bo run in divisions. If the field is not divided, the draw at the post rs likely to have some bearing on the result, for the race is over five and a-half furlongs. Thero is not much in the way of form to serve as a guide and what little there is points to Sunny Blonde and Perfect Lady. Among others who have shown ability to gallop are Black Frost and Diamond Cutter, and tho issue is open. Three .that may mako most appeal are: Perfect Lady, Sunny Blonde and Diamond Cutter.

If the race is divided Aube and Appendage may appeal in the second division.

The Bolton Handicap, with Bed Manfred and Werohia going on for the Auckland Cup, and Martara, a candidate for the G.N. Derby, will bo of particular interest. Red Manfred has not race t since Wellington but he has gone on the right way since. Fit and well, Red Manfred would have a good chance. Werohia, though not regarded as brilliant, must be near his best. He will be all the.better for his Feilding race and he should have a royal show of repeating his last year's winning performance in°this race. Arctic King has not xaced since July, but Tout le Monde, who looks very well, was a winner at Banks Peninsula. Alchemic raced at Feilding and should be improved as a result. Full Throttle is well and so is the Derby candidate, Martara, who is confidently expected to make it hard for tho others. There are only seven acceptors but tho issue is open. Tho punters may go most strongly for: Bed. Manfred, Martara, and Werohia. Tho Nursery Handicap, with twelve acceptors, including five new ones to the racing public, is certain to be an interesting event, and Nigger Minstrel is tho only sire with more than one “youngster" entered. Of those that have already raced, Geira, Felicitation and Lady Montana have tho best credentials, but Relative, a daughter of Eulogy) by Posterity, Private Bunsby, from Riccarton, and Bluffer, from Awapum, have also shown ability to gallop. The betting, however, is likely to point to: Geira, Relative and Lady Montana. The Trial Plate, over- six furlongs, has attracted a god field of a dozen and the issue is open. Export, Taupin, Acron, En Vidette, Lucullus Lad, Eotoma and Sunny Blonde have been in the money this season, and it is probable the punters will look to these to furnish tho winner. Preference may be given to: Lucullus Lad, Export and Rotoma. Next is the open sprint with Pakanui holding pride of place in the weights. Taking a line through his form at Riccarton, Pakanui has hot been harshly treated with 9.0, and Karl, after his solid performance on the second day of the Feilding meeting, is well in with 8.9. Lavina won at Hastings last month, among those behind her on that occasion being Mata Hari. Symcony, Invoice and Porotiti are worthy of respect, and so is Mata Hari, who finished a close second to Karl at feilding after getting much the worst of the start. Bodyline was third each day at Feildmg and he, also, will have to be taken into calculations. Tho betting will be spread but the favourites may be: ' Pakanui, Karl and Mata Hari.

Tho seventh race is the Mangarawa Handicap, a hack sprint over six furlongs. There aro eleven acceptors and the form horses are Peter Beckford, Kind. Heart , Blygain, Prevail, Patagonia, Lord Quick and Vonia Park. When the machine has closed it may be found that the public have gone mo3t strongly for:

Prevail, Kind Heart, and Blygain. The, first , day ’s programme will bo concluded with the Whariti Handicap, which is due to start about 5 p.m. It will bo decided oyer a mile and a distance and the field will be a big one, no les than 39 horses having been accepted. It, will be a gTeat race and a blanket finish is indicated. Ingenuity, won well over a mile and a quarter

with 7.11 in the saddle on the second day of the Fcilding meeting and the effort does not apepar to have done her any harm. Taumau has been working well and Granvale, Helen Ford, King’s Lancer and Whotuma cannot be far from their best. Corroboree ran a fine race at Bulls and the long Woodville straight should be all to his liking. Of the others, Maestro and Nightlass should bo capable of upsetting the pool. The betting will take a wide range but three that will have plenty of friends aro Corroboree, Ingenuity, and King's Lancer.

THE ACCEPTANCES. 12.15- ~~~ MANGA-ATUA HURDLES HANDICAP, of £9O; 1J miles. Lord Red Rufus 9 IS

SCRATCHINGS POSTED At 11.30 o’clock yesterday morning Nightlass was scratched for all engagements at Woodville. PROM VARIOUS SOURCES J. Fryer’s team for the Manawatu meeting will probably comprise One Whetu, Glenthawn, Supreme Court, Le Grand and Ned Cuttle. Other members will race at New Plymouth. Of O. Cox's team, Lowenberg and Friesland are booked for Manawatu, also the big gelding Fair Day. Lowenberg and Friesland are in great heart and should strip in tip-top order. Manawatu first-day weights are due to make their appearance next Monday. Kohika, one of the acceptors for tho Trial Plato at Woodville to-day, will be remembered for his surprise win at the Hunt Club meeting at Dannevirke last July. LARGER PRIZE TO MEET OCCASION Cup to be run at Epson (England) next The added money for the Coronation year, has been increased to £l5O and a £2OO gold cup, while the trainer of the winner will receive a gold cigarettebox, valued at £SO, and the rider , of tre winner a gold-mounted Wrip.' It is considered unlikely that, the King’s colours will be carried in tho race, which was instituted in 1902-to commemorate the Coronation of the late King Edward.' '

RECORD RUN OF DERBY MISFORTUNE.

Lord Astor’a ill-luck in owning, the second in the English Derby on live occasions is often quoted as a record, but Richard, tho first Earl of Grosvenor, who was born in 1731 and died in 1802, had an oven worse experience. The “Orange, blackx cap’’ first appeared in a Derby field in 1782, when Sweet Robin was second to Assassin. Other seconds were Carlo Khan in 1784, Grantham in 1785, Meteor in 1786, ,and Aurelius in 1788. After a third with Brotrer to Skylark in 1789, the Earl’s Rhadamanthus and Asparagus finished first and second in the Epsom classic in 1790. , , „
