Farmers’ Difficulties

EFFECTS OF WET SPRING THAMES, Dec. 5. The farmers of tho Hauraki Plains, particularly in some of the softer areas, arc encountering difficulties this year owing to the wet spring. The top soil is water-logged, and the land is not drying as it usually does each October and November. The prevalence of earthworms is making matters worse. The worms are pulverising the top soil, which is becoming spongy and holds the water. There is no lack of grass, .but farmers do not dare run stock on the Infected areas, as the beasts would only trample down the feed.

Dairy cows have received a severe set-back, and it is noticeable that milk yields have decreased. The cattle are becoming abnormally fat.
