Seaside Holiday Facilities

NEW TENNIS COURT AT WAITARERE. Yet another step forward in the development of Waitarere beach township was made on Saturday afternoon with the opening of the new public tennis court which has just recently been laid down. The court, which should fill a long-felt need amogst the holiday populace of the centre, has come into existence as the result of tho enterprise of Mr and Mrs. L. Moffatt, and is situated in close proximity to their business premises, where there is room for the laying-down of a futher court should this expansion prove justifiable, of which there is every indication. Although the proceedings were to some extent marred by tho rain which fell during the afternoon, the weather remained fine for several enjoyable sets to be played, amongst the numerous visitors who visited the court for the occasion, the games being arranged under the direction of Mr. R, Irwin. Those present included members of several of the local and district clubs, as well as a number of players from Palmerston North.

The opening ceremony was performed by Mr. W. S. Park, who, in addressing the gathering, said that it was now over six years since the road giving access to the locality had been completed, and despite the advent of the slump period, it was unquestionable that in that period a prosperous township had been established, as was to be seen by the amount of building which had taken place during the last two or three years. It was to be remembered, said Mr Park, that the amenities of life follow settlement, and in the case of such a township as that of Waitarere, the pioneers had to provide their own amusement beyond those afforded by Nature. This was the occasion of the opening of the first of these, and the community was thus greatly indebted to the promoters for their enterprise. It was only to be hoped that the future would see the provision of facilities for the indulgence in other forms of sport. In declaring the court duly open for play, Mr. Park called for cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Moffatt.

These were heartily given, after which afternoon tea was partaken of by those present.
