State Highways Control

GOVERNMENT’S PROPOSALS. At yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council a letter was received from the Public Works Department intimating that main highways taken over by the State as Stato highways would be maintained by the Gi - ernment as from November 1. Until such time as tho Main Highways Board was in a position to assume full control of the particular roads local authorities would remain in charge of their sections of State highways and would be reimbursed for the whole of tho maintenance and construction expenditure within the limits of approval already in existence. No additional work beyond that covered by the authorities already issued would bo permitted without the board’s approval. Tho letter was received without comment, after the County Clerk (Mr. A. K. Drew) had explained that the letter simply set out the position following the Government’s announcement of its intention to take ovor certain main highways.
