Feilding School Committees

MONTHLY MEETINGS HELD. The monthly meeting of the Lytton Street School Committee was held on Monday evening, Mr. C. V. Jewell (chairman) presiding. There were also present: Messrs. 11. T. Simmonds, J. S. Tingey, C. V. Guy, L. Jenkins, F. P. Fawcett, C. A. Batt (headmaster) and Mesdames T. Donaldson and E. Scott.

The headmaster reported as follows: —“The roll number at present is SIS and tho average attendance 299.5. Parents’ Day was held on a larger scale this year. In spite of the poor weather over £2B was cleared, £7 13s 6d of this being the result of a bottle drive, into which the pupils entered heartily. The staff wishes to thank Mr. L. J. Wild, tho principal of the Agricultural High School, for the loan of the maypole for Barents’ Day. I wish to thank the parents, who have this year very willingly and keenly supported all school functions. In connection with the sports, motor-cars have been willingly offered and no function has suffered from lack of enthusiastic support. The committee has been a very pleasing one with which to work, and to its fine attitude a great deal of the year’s success is due. The Parents’ Association has also functioned admirably and has proved to be a genuine asset to the school. I wish to thank the staff for their hearty co-operation in all that contributes to the welfare of the pupils. On tho whole the attendance has improved this year and the roll has reached its highest point for three years or so. I would suggest as an aim for the future a library room and a library, also shelters after tho style of summei houses for tho use of the primer pupils lor lessons during the line weather The board has recently installed electric light in all rooms of the school and has also provided blinds for the windows on the sunny side of the building.”

Speaking to the report, the chairman said that thanks were due to ail who had contributed towards the outstanding success of Parents' Day. Despite the unfortunate change in the weather the arrangements had been carried through without a hitch and the response by parents and supporters of the school had been most gratifying. Mrs. Scott supported the chairman and proposed a vote of thanks to the staff, parents and the children, for ,their help and co-operation. This was carried unanimously. The question of maintaining membership with the District (School Committees' Association was introduced by the chairman, who expressed the opinion that having in view the status of the Wanganui .education Board and the assistance obtained from that institution no useful purpose was being served by tho association. He moved that the committee send in its resignation as a member. Mr. Tingey supported the motion and agreed witu the chairman that the Education Board was working with every satisfaction to all concerned. The meeting carried the resolution after a brief discussion. It was decided to lay down a cricket pitch for the use of pupils. In connection with tho keeping of the grass in tho largo playing field cut, Mr. Guy offered the suggestion that it might be possible to come to some arrangement with the local Athletic Association and the Borough Council to have the grass removed on the playing fields of the two schools. It w r as agreed that Mr. Guy should make further enquiries regarding his proposal. It was decided to hold tho breakingup ceremony on December 17 and to invite the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, M.P., ,the .Mayor (Mr. T. Collins) and Mr. J. W. Batchelor, district representative on the Wanganui Education Board, to attend.

The chairman stated that the matter of forming an Old Pupils’ Association had been held in abeyance.

MANCHESTER STREET SCHOOL. At the meeting of the Manchester Street School Committee on Monday evening, Mr. G. J. Fitzpatrick (chairman) presided. Tkero were also present: Messrs. J. Campbell, Z. McLeod, 11. Burne, L. J. Carmine, A. K. Robertshaw (headmaster) and Mrs. P. G. Guy. The headmaster reported' as follows: —“The school roll stood at 382, with an average attendance of 344. The school would close for the Christmas vacation on Thursday, the 17th inst. The quadrangle concert rvould bo held on Tuesday, 15th inst., and it was suggested the breaking-up ceremony might be. held on Wednesday afternoon, the ICth. Ho asked what fees it was proposed to charge for dental treatment next year. The school savings bank was running smoothly and for the past 15 months the total of £162 had been banked, the children paying in an average sum of £3 weekly.” Discussing the dental clinic fee, it w r as reported' that last year the fees collected from the children receiving treatment amounted to £ll short of that due owing to the fact that many parents, whose children had received treatment, had not paid. The clinic committee had adopted the policy that unless fees were paid no treatment Would be given. It was proposed by Mr. Carmine that the fee for next year be 3s 3d a child with a reduction where there were several children in- one family receiving treatment. The proposal was seconded by Air. Burns and carried, the chairman and Mr. Campbell voting against the increase which they claimed would act against the school.' The meeting agreed to hold the break-ing-up ceremony on the date suggested by the headmaster and it was agreed to invite the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, ALP., to attend.- ... . Wanganui Education Board advising the capitation grant to the school would bo increased by £72 for the current year.

The chairman said that normally the committee received an additional £l2, but it would be seen that it was now to receive a further £OO which was most gratifying since the grants had not been sufficient to meet the ordinary expenses of the committee. The'committee of the School Parents' Association waited on the meeting to hand over £45 being the not profit from tho gala day proceedings. Tho committee suggested that the money be used to purchase books for the school library.

Tho chairman thanked the Parents’ Association for its splendid help, and the headmaster was appointed to assist the Parents’ Association committee in the purchase of suitable books for £he library*
