MEETING Or THE COUNCIL. The Manawatu County Council met at Sanson yesterday, Cr. W. E. Barber (chairman) presiding. Thcro were also present: Councillors N. Morcom, D. W. Bcid, B. A. Wilson, J'. H. Perrett aud J. Boyce. • ; Correspondence. The following correspondence was dealt with: — From the Transport Department, thanking local bodies for co-operation in sending copies of by-laws relating to .traffic and proposing action to lix speed limits with universal application. —Received. From the Department of Internal Affairs forwarding particulars of legis iation validating acts of local authorities in connection with extraordinary expenditure. —Received. From the State Advances Corporation, regarding the Government’s housing scheme. —Received. From the Public Works Department, advising that the wages of clerks ot works would, in luture, be subsidised. — Received. From tho Department of Labour on the subject of combating the rabbit pest, stating that it had been decided to terminate the existing arrangements under Scheme No. II and to grant assistance generally on an amended basis where the eradication of the pest was carried out by fumigation and, or by, poisoning methods. —Received. From tho Alanawatu-Oroua River Board, asking the council to declare goatsrue a noxious weed within the boundaries of the county. —Decided to advise the board that goatsrue was already declared a noxious weed in the county. From Mr. R. Anderson, Sanson, claiming compensation amounting to £1 11s id for a crate of eggs lost at the Ohakea tramway siding.—Decided to pay. From Mr. D. H. Beattie, Kopane, requesting increased royalty for motai taken from his property. —Agreed to pay. From settlers of Makowhai, requesting action towards abating the flooding of a stream over Taylor’s line.—Referred to the chairman and engineer for report. Treasurer’s Report, The treasurer reported on the county finances as follows: County fund account, debit, £BO9B 7s 6d; loan account, credit, £3066 6s 6d. Tramway Manager’s Report. The tramway manager reported as follows: —The items of traffic for the month of November were as follows: Eggs, 16 crates; metal, 297 cubic ya/ls; merchandise, 14 tons; minerals, 52 tons; posts and wood, 3 trucks; manure, V tons; wool, 47 bales; 1 mechanical navvy, and 1 ton of general items. The earnings for the month were £76 17s 3d and tho running expenses £122 2s Bd. In addition to the running expenses a sum of £llO 10s 5d has been spent on repairs and renewals to the line, and £l3B 6s 6d on the purchase of sleepers. Rate Roll Alterations. The following alterations were made in tho county rate roll: Poplar Flaxmilling Co., Ltd., to Max G. "Voss, lot 22, D.P. 3168, pt. sec. 322, township of Carnarvon; Esther Fearniey, to W. H. Boyce, lot 56 of sec. 268, blk. 1, Moutere; Walter Howlett, to Clarence G. Howlett,, sec., township of Tangimoana; estate E. A. Morris, to Charles Hurdsfleld, sec. No. 227, town of Campbell; J. M. Giles, to Garlies Mil>.gan, jnr., sec. 15S, blk. 1, Kairanga S.D.; estate Sophia Barnaby, to Frederick J. Parkinson, lots 24 and 25, D.P. 514, sec. 384, township of Carnarvon. Engineer’s Report. The county engineer (Mr. H. V. Bond) reported as follows: Main highways: The shoulders of the Sanson-Bulls and Sanson-Awahuri roads have been built up with metal. The bridge approaches of the Feilding-Awa-huri road have been patched and the surface metalling on this road has been completed. The survey in connection with the reconstruction is still in progress. The ordinary grading and maintenance work has been continued on the Himatangi-Sanson highway. The concrete hand rail of Grace ’3 bridge has been smashed by a transport lorry which caught fire and the bituminous road surface at this point was damaged. A claim for repairs is being forwarded to the owners of the lorry. At another point approximately 14 miles south of Sanson the bituminous road surface has been damaged with a caterpillar tractor. A claim for repairs is also being forwarded to tho owners. Trees have been cut back at the approach to tho Oroua river bridgo at Kopane. Clay ha 3 been spread on the Tangimoana highway from Campion’s line to Tangimoana. The Foxton beach and Whirokino roads have been patched with maintenance metal. It has not been possible to grade the metal sur-

faco portion of the Whirokino road owing to the sand fillings on the northern end of the road. All metal surfaced highways have been graded in order of their urgency. County roads and bridges: Maintenance metal has been spread on Seabury avenuo and approaches to the beach have been shaped up with the grader. Draining has been undertaken in Kan Kari. The lower portion of Spring’s road has now been brought into reasonable shape by the grader. Piaka road has been graded into shape. This being an earth road, a fair amount of scooping had to be undertaken to restore it to a uniform grade. Downs' and Puawai roads have been patched with surface metal. Willows have been cut and drains have been cleaned on Tompkins’ line. The culvert which had been washed out on Leen’s line has been repaired. Several 2ft. 6in. diameter concrete pipes have been renewed, 147 cubic yards of filling have been replaced and an outlet drain has been dug. Ocean beach and Rivcrbank roads have been graded and clay has been spread. The concrete foundations for Taylor’s lino bridge have been placed. The abutments and centre pier are also almost complete. Surface metal has beea spread ou the Halcombe-Mt. Stewart and To Rakehou roads. Tho usual maintenance work has been continued and the road surfaces have been graded in tho order of their urgency.
