Tho Pahiatua County Council's finai meeting year was held in the County Council Chambers on Saturday, l’hero were present Councillors A. W. Bisset (chairman), T. Fouhy, F. H. Bolton, F. If. Thorne, F. V. Bryant, W. Lassen, H. E. Whitta, and J. E. Nelson. Leave of absence was granted Cr. Hog

gins. Accounts amounting to £2454 17s 5d were read and passed, for payment. Mr F. M. Gregorie asked for permission to carry out widening work on the Pori road between tho bridge to the Makuri stream, saying that it was too narrow for cars to pass and that he could arrange for assistance for tho work.

Cr. Nelson stated that tho piece of road was indeed dangerous, thero being about a quarter of a mile of very light limestono rock bank. The chairman moved that the overseer and Cr. Nelson bo left to interview the. settlers and report to the nest meeting of the county council. Tho Mangatainoka Athletic Association sought permission to prohibit cars from parking within 5b yards of the Domain gate on Boxing day.—Tho clerk was instructed to write tho Athletic Society and inform them that the road was a State highway now and they would have to refer the matter to the Main Highway Board. Cr. Bryant asked if the drain culvert had been put in for the Mangatainoka ground, the overseer stating that this week would see the work done.

Mr B. Hay asked for a small culvert and drain at Ballance to be opened up and lowered some two feet in order to afford drainage facilities to his land.— Cr. Horne stated that the road was very swampy on both sides and it was a sea of mud. It was leit for the chairman and the overseer to look into the matter, with power to act. The Minister of Justice wrote stating, in reference to property mortgaged or leased that rates could not be sued for prior, to July 31, 1937; further, that with leave of the Court, action could be taken for the recovery of rates before an application was disposed of, but not otherwise.

The Highways B'oard granted authority for £4263 for the Napier-Wellington sealing job and £37 for the Mangaone bridge contract. The Transport Department advised of the revoking of local speed limits in certain cases, also the provisions of the new Act are to apply in the following cases: reckless or negligent driving; careless or inconsiderate driving; 30 miles per hour maximum in built-up areas; speed such as a motorist is ablo to stop in half the distance of clear road ahead.

“The traffic inspector has been taken over by the Government, so everything should be all right,” stated tho chairman.

Tho Department of Lands intimated that they could not entertain tho council’s applicaion to have the Makuri municipal roserve vested in the council for the purpose of a roadman’s cottage site; and stated that the council already had three sections in the Makuri township area. “I think we should keep at them and insist on having a reason,’* stated the chairman.

Cr Bryant: We could change our section for a more suitable one for building purposes. The matter was left in the hands of the clerk to write again.

A second letter from the Lands Department advised that the council’s desire to have a roadman’s cottage in Maugatainoka could not bo exercised unless tho purpose of the reserve is changed.—-Beceived. The treasurer’s report was read, and tho chairman moved that the holidays set out as from December 24 to January 11, 1937, be accepted.—Carried. Cr Bissct, in closing tho meeting, wished all those present a very happy and merry Christmas. Overseer’s Beport. The overseer (Mr S. Macrae) presented the following report: — The tractor has been employed on Hall’s road and also at Ballance, where 8.00 cubic yards of shingle has boen dumped for maintenance work. The trucks have also been employed on the main highways and also on the roads at Makomako, Mangahao, Kaitawa and Konini, where surface repairs have been attended to. The graders have operated on all of the highways. Beads at Mangatainoka, Kaitawa, Ballance, Konini and Marima have also been graded. Main Highways Wellington—Napier: Surface has beea patched and shoulders have been built up. Biver protection work at Warreu’s bridge has been completed.

Pahiatua—Pongaroa: Eoad has been graded throughout and 400 cubic yards of crushed metal has been utilised for surface repairs. Widening at a dangerous wash-out on tho Pongaroa hill is nearing .completion and a wash-out has been filled in the Makuri Gorge. Pahiatua—Eailway Station:' Flood damage to shoulders has been repaired.. Makuri —Coouoor: Widening at a dangerous bend on tho Mangatoro hill is proceeding. The crusher is being installed and crushing will commence atan early date. Pahiatua —Mangaone: Widening work at the bluff has been completed and the new formation has' been metalled. A dangerous wash-out on the Kaitawa hill has been filled.' The road has' been graded and 200 cubic yards of metal has been utilised for surface repairs. Pah Valley; General surface-work has been attended to. Tutaekara: All loose metal has been graded in and surface has been patched. County Roads Pahiatua —Balance Gorge: Eoad has been graded and surface has been patched. Dumping of metal for maintenance work is proceeding, and 350 cubic yards of metal has been spread on the new formation on Berne’s hill. Mangahao—Valley: Loose metal has been graded in and a line of 12-inch pipes have been laid. Ebbett’s bridge has been completed and the old struc ture dismantled.

Palmerston Track: Water tables have been cleaned and slips have been removed.

Makomako —Tutaekara: Metal has been graded in and scrub has been cut. A dangerous point on the Mangamairo hill has been widened.

Kopikopiko —Nao Nac: Water-tables have been cleaned and a line of two-* foot pipes has been laid where a deviation will be as.a road improvement.

Scarborough—Konini: Biver protection at Bridge road has been completed. On the hill section a line of pipes has been laid and overhanging. scrub has been cut. Surface patching has been attended to and two bridge decks have been repaired. Mangamaire —Pukewhai: Bond has been graded and bridges.have been repaired. . Bock—Makakahi: As a result of a heavy storm iu this locality, several large slips had to.be removeed. Konini township: Grading has been carried out and a culvert of 24 square feet is being constructed where an old culvert collopsed.

Maiigaramarama: Fifty cubic yards of metal has been.spread where necessary. Mangatainoka township: Grading work has been attended to and bridges have been repaired. Buawhata: Water-tables havo been boen cleaned and loose metal has been graded in. Tiraumea North: Surface patching has been carried ont and willows at Bolton’s bridge have been cut. Oete —Ngaturi: Pot-holes h been filled and slips have been cleared. A line of nine-inch pipes has been laid. , Kohinui —Towai: Slips have been removed and overhanging scrub has been cut. Men are at present employed on the Makairo section where storm damage is being repaired. . Woodville—Aohanga: General surface work has been raked in and bridges havo been repaired. Drains on tho Ohirereiata section have been openod. » Pori —Kaitawa Bidge: Water-tables have been cleaned and scrub has been cut. A line of pipes is required where an old culvert has collapsed, and this work will be carried out at an early date.

Tiraumea Valley: Slips have been cut cut back and two water-tables ' have been cleaned. All loose metal has been graded in. ' Kaitawa township: Surface patching has been attended to and slips havo been removed.
