BIG CHRISTMAS ISSUE A year of successful development of the New Zealand Railways Magazine has fittingly culminated in a big Christmas issue of 88 pages, with sixty pictures. Many people will bo pleased with James Cowan’s treatment of Sir Truby King in tho ‘‘Famous New Zealauders” series. Ken Alexander, in whimsical prose, verse and drawings, spins along merrily in ..‘‘Signalling Santa.” Miss Nellie Donovan has a charming story, ‘‘Tho Spirit of Christmas.” O. N. Gillespie tells New Zealanders convincingly that they have ‘‘The W'orld’s Ideal Stud Farm—the Laud of the Thoroughbred.” Stuart Perry gives a very amusing self-con-tained instalment of ‘‘The Thirteenth Club” which is getting into as merry a mix-up as any mystery-lover could desire. In ‘‘Early Auckland Newspapers” W. Mervyn Lusty gives some very vivid drame of old times. In ‘‘Nature’s Statuary in the Castle Hill Basin,” along the roue of the Midland Railways, South Island, Miss Elsie L. Thompson does justice to a remarkable scenic feature. In ‘‘Panorama of the Playground,” W. F. Ingianv gives a very pleasant presentation of Jack Lovelock as an athlete who ‘‘champions the ‘also-rans.’ ” ‘‘Helen,” in the women’s section, takes the opportunity to offer some very helpful notes and comments for Christmas from various viewpoints.
