Saturday’s Games

New games were commenced in the Manawatu Cricket competitions on Saturday. The senior division witnessed some tall scoring, the batsmen being on top for the occasion. UNITED EXCEL THEMSELVES. A feature of the United-Y.M.C.A. game was the line initial stand by the opening batsmen for United with the lower ranks successfully emulating them. Ulliver and Spiers opened, thelormer to just miss his century. He played a lively innings especially with leg balls giving one chance only into slips when 71. Spiers gave a chance into covers at 15 and on the wnole scored slowly. He hit 5 boundaries compared with 14 by Oilivcr. Palmerston enjoyed a big day against High School whose bowling mev ruthlessly battered to draw stumps with 391 runs for 5 wickets (.declared;. SENIOR B. Combined Services set Young’s the task of passing 179 to which W. H. Wilson contributed 77 (two sizes), and Hancock 27. Stumps were drawn when tho rain set in with Young*s 34 up for the loss of two wickets. Old Boys mado 108 (Jennings 53 including four sixes, and Swindell 18) in their game with Ilia Toa who replied with 215 (Brown 59, G. Wasley 30, Heatlcy 26, Fiercy 21). In their second strike Old Boys had 25 up for flie loss of no wickets. Bowling for Kia Toa G. Wasley took 4 for 36 and Piercy 6 for 32. For Old Boys Thompson took 4 for 17. City made 218 (Lang 70, Baigent 57) against YtM.C.A. who had hit up 116 at stumps for the loss of 4’ wickets (Hornibroolc 53 not out, Shaw 34). JUNIOR A. Services scored 99 (Woodley 25, Blummont 21) against High School who. had 99 on the board when the game was called off for tho day on account of tho rain. Bobbie contributed 44. Bowling for Services Wills took 4 for 22, Coates 3 for 24 and Morgan 2 for 23. For School Lucas took 3 for 18, liowland 4 for 26 and Bose 2 for 2. Massey College knocked up 173 in the face of a medium attack by Old Boys, thanks largely to Ball who treated tho bowling with no great respect and compiled SO. Others to do well were Pierce 19, Begg 18, Bowie 10. Waldegrave had signal success us a bowler, taking 8 wickets for 63 runs. Nansett and O'Keefe took one each. Old Boys in reply wore half way through their first strike when the rain again overtook them. Cutler, who has been specialising as top scorer for United in recent weeks, was again in the high numbers of Saturday, making 74 against Optimists. United’s total was 146, other useful contributors being Ward 17 and McGregoi 16. Bowling honours were shared by L, Zalourn (4 for 21), Bice (4 for 49), McNabb (1 for 27). Bowling for City McDonald took 4 for 33, Blackwell 4 for 38 and Goldfinch 2 for 24. Bowling for Y. M.C.A. Houghton captured 5 for 16 and Holland 2 for 35. Y.M.C.A. started a second innings but rain interrupted play when one wicket was down for 50 (Gaskin 34 not out).
