Woodville Track Work

COURSE IN WONDERFUL ORDER. FRANCIS DRAKE IS WELL. Interest was added to Saturday’s track work at Woodville by tiue presence of a number pf visitors. Werohia bas been at the centre since tbe Feilding meeting, aiso Lord Hereford, Mata Ilari and xln Vidette, and Tout le Monde, Invoice, In tbe Dark and Private Buusby arrivod in Woodville on Friday. T. Lloyd states that the trip over from tbe South Island was calm but Invoice lost a bit of bark between Lyttelton and Wellington. The quartette arrived in good order, liowover, and one or more of them should help with the oat bill before returning south.

Though tho sky was overcast, tho weather was ideal for track work ou Saturday and tho course, a tritie slow, could not have been better. Fred Davis's team was first out and among tho early gallopers were Mandamus, Red Manfred and Plato. Mandamus (M. Gilmore), who is a lazy track worker, was speeded up over six furlongs and ho was doing it the right way at the end after completing the trip in 1.205. The trestles wore about 24 feet out.

Haut Monde was not accepted for Woodville, the stable not being thrilleil about the weight ho was given for iue opening day. He will do his Christmas racing at Auckland.

Red Manfred’s task was similar to that of Mandamus and with N. Cavaney in the saddlo ho cut six out in 1.18, going particularly well over the closing stages. Red Manfred looks to be himself again. Ho goes to Auckland for tka cup meeting. Plato (M, Gilmore) who appears ,to be improved since the C.J.C. meeting, sprinted half a mile in the smart time of 49 2-5. He is going to Auckland where he is expected to give a good account of himself.

Karl (N. Cavaney) was sent out for half a mile on the course proper but he broke away short of the live-furlong barrier and he completed his task in 1.41. He is to race at Awapuui at Christmas and he appears to bo none the worse for his Feilding outings under silk. ■

Werohia, with Harold Stowe, a lightweight nephew of Lance Stowe, ha tho saddle, was galloped a mile. Ho began slowly but once he was “revving” at top he never looked like slackening and when the post was reached' he was still going along as if it was a pace he could keep to for a montln Tho time was 1.551. Werohia is starting both .days at Woodville and will be ridden by B. H. Morris. - Ho is going to start in the Auckland Cup and he looks as well as ho can be.

Appendage (Cavanoy) sprinted half a mile in 50 2-5 and finished strongly.

Lord Hereford covered tho last half mile of a six furlong flutter in 59. He looks to be none the worse for Feilding. He has been accepted for tho hurdles on the first day of the meeting at Woodvillo but thero is more than a chance that ho will be scratched in favour of his stable mate, Tahoma.

Tahoma and Nereus were to have arrived in Woodville on Saturday. Nereus .has been accepted for tho Maiden Stakes. He is a Tidal horse and he had a race at Napier Park. Blue Tiger, a very sound jumper, will figure in tho hurdles at Woodville and ho will be ridden by Chris McGovern. He was worked on the plough on Saturday and he appears to have made a complete recovery from the injury he received at Trentham.

H. E. Russell left on Saturday for Auckland, where he will spend the Christmas holidays. An interesting gallop was that in which the two-year-olds, Francis Drake (Gilmore) and Aiwai (Cavaney) were associated. It was over five furlongs and Erancis Drake was galloping half a length to the good at tho post. The time was 1.5 and Francis Drake was going in such a way at the finish that he would hate to be beaten.

Fred Davis will take Francis Drake, Red Manfred, Plato, Haut Monde, Relative, Mandamus and Aiwai to Ellersiie. W. J. Broughton will ride Francis Drake, Red Manfred and Pladie, and it is likely that P. Atkins will ride the others.

Mata Hari (A. Lord), who appeared to be a bit unlucky on tho second day at Feilding, sprinted six furlongs, the last five of which took 1.5 2-5.

T. Lloyd arrived on Friday and his horses were not given serious work on Saturday. Invoice and Tout le Monde, with stable boys up, wero sprinted half a mile and Tout le Monde was in front at the finish after taking 53 1-5 for the distance. Tout le Monde, a horse with the most cheerful disposition, appears to be in splendid nick. In the Dark, who is very much like his sire, Nightmarch, was given easy pace work, also the two-year-old, Private Bunsby, whose dam is an English mare, Toiling Tessie. Private Bunsby is a sort likely to be heard more of next season.

En Vidette (Lord) sprinted six furlongs in 1.20 1-5, the last five taking 1.6,

After the breakfast interval Tfiala (Cavaney) was sprinted three furlongs with Brown Oak (Gilmore), and Thala, a long-striding and very bold galloper was a couple of lengths to the good after taking 37 3-5 for the distance. Thala is but of Curtsey, a Limond mare, and is not likely to race before the autumn.

Flammarion (W, Styles) was given strong pace work on the No. 1 grass. He is in great heart and he should not take long to get into racing trim. Full Throttle (Tracey) was galloped a mile and he went strongly throughout to complete in 1.47 1-5, aft* requiring 1.7 for tho first five furlongs. Geira and Relative were restricted to

easy track tasks and Courtcraft was

speeded up over a couple of furlongs down the back stretch. Additional Riding Engagements.

Additional riding engagements for Woodville are:— S. Wilson: Mata Hari. J. Forsyth: En Videttc. C. Wilson: Tout le Monde, Invoice, In the Dark and Private Bunsby. C. McGovern: Blue Tiger,
