From Oiif Own Correspondent. Successful Euchre and Dance. Despite inclement weather, at least one hundred and fifty people were, present at a euchre tournament and dance, the first of a series of efforts to be held locally for the purpose of raising tunds for tho children's Christmas cheer week. Much entnusiasm is being evinced in the idea by local traders and citizens generally, and Christmas this year in Foxton promises to be particularly cheery and festive. The euenre and dance proved to bo an outstanding success and so great was the enthusiasm of those present that another similar function was insisted upon ior Alonday evening next, when it is conlidently expected that two hundred people will attend. Supper was served by a band of willing helpers and dancing was subsequently indulged in, the music being supplied by Ait- T. Fast. Air T. Chalfey carried out the duties of AX.C. Novelty dances were -won as follows:—Alonte carlo. Airs W. Neville and Air D. Smith; lucky' Gay Gordons, Aliss Clayton and Air A. Taylor. During the evening vocal solos were rendered oy Aliss E. Fillers and Air R. Paliina. Valedictory. Alls Alohekey, a memDer of tile Foxton, Boy Scout committee, and Scout J. Alonekey were tne guests of honour at a lareweli evening tendered them by members of the committee and the scouts on Alonday evening. Air J. Ross presided over tne gathering and before the commencement of proceedings, a motion of sympathy was- passed by -Airs. Haynes ill tne loss she had sustained in the death of her son. Airs Haynes is a member of committee and Scout J. Haynes was" one of the' foundation members of the local troop. The flag was lowered to half-mast and the assemoled scouts sang “Taps’' for their comrade. The programme which had been arranged for the evening’s entertainment was abandoned and after supper had been served, presentations were made to Airs Alohekey and Scout Alohekey, who are taking up their residence in Palmerston North at an early date. Air J. Ross, on behalf of the committee .members, called on Airs Alohekey to accept a crystal dish as a token of appreciation from her lellow committee members. Air E. Field responded on Dehalf of Airs Alohekey. The group scoutmaster (Air H. Hamer), on behalf of the scouts, presented Scout J. Alohekey with some interesting books on scouting, which he suitably acknowledged. Croquet. In the first match to be participated in by Foxton ofr the Sherwood Cup this yeai, members of the Alanakau Croquet Club were successful in defeating the local players by a margin of nine points, che total scores being: Alanakau 15 points, Foxton 37 points. The match was played on the local lawns. The details, of play were as follow, Foxton players being mentioned first;—Air Rurgin lost to Airs Nicholson, 11—26; Alesdames R. Owen and M. E. Perreau defeated Alesdames Bryant and Evans, 26 —19. Personal and General. Airs R. A. Robbie, of Marton, is at present on a visit to Foxton, where she is (ho guest of Airs S. Newth, of Avenuo road Air E. Healey, of Sydney, is at present on a visit to Foxton. Air W. Hart has severed his connection with Aiessrs Goldingham and Beckett, Dtd., after almost twenty-five. years In their employ. His retirement follows a recent period of ill-health. Air L.\G. Potts has been appointed his successor. Airs Bantrop, of Feilding. who officiated as judge of the decorative seel ion at the Foxton Horticultural Society’s summer show, held on Tuesday, was laud in her praises of the high standard of the work entered in this section. The cake presented by Air and Airs I. W. Aludford for competition at the show was the object of considerable admiration. The delicat6 and artistic fretwork icing displayed remarkable skill. Mrs W. Woodham was the lucky winner.
