Widow Awarded £2OOO

FATAL QUARRY ACCIDENT. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, Dec. 4. A verdict for £2OOO, the full amount claimed, was awarded a widow, Kathleen Williamson, as damages against the Crown in respect of an accident at Mapiu on August 4, when the suppliant's husband, Frederick Stanley Williamson, was killed in a quarry controlled by the Public Works Department.

The husband was employed as a quarryinan, and it was submitted that he was ignorant of the danger attaching to the work. The suppliant, whose claim took the form of a petition of right under the Crown Suits Act, alleged that the quarry was in charge of unqualified men, and that there was no system of supervision or of recording falls of rock. She maintained that none of the employees possessed permits under the Stone Quarries Act.
