HIGH SCHOOLS’ BOARD MEETS. Mr. M. H. Oram presided at a meeting of tho Palmerston North High School Board of Governors last evening. Also present were: Messrs. W. I*. Birnie, J. W. Rutherford, T. D. Lynch, G. Tremaine, T. R. Hodder, J. A. Nash and Mrs. Aitchison. An apology was received from Mr. A. J. Graham. The Director of the Technical High School (Mr. G. G. Hancox) reported that tho annual examinations for both day and evening students were in progress. At tho A. and P. Spring Show students gained prizes as follows: — Firsts, 19 in art, 8 in cookery and one in engineering; seconds, 17 in art, 6 in cookery, one in needlework and one in engineering; thirds, five in art, live in cookery; v.h.c.’s, three in art, three m cookery; li.e.’s, two in art; c.'s, one in art. The annual exhibition would be held on November 20 and 27 and parents’ evening on November 23. The annual breaking-up function would be held in the assembly hall on December 9 at 8 p.m., when the speaker would be Dr. J. Uigkt, C.M.G., rector of Canterbury University. Miss IJ.1 J . Hobbs Had won the cup donated by Mrs. M. Bcdinglield for a prepared speech competition. The Rector of the Boys’ Hign School (Mr. J. Murray) reported a roil of 363 with an average attendance of 300. E. Menendez was successful in keeping terms in the recent Victoria College examination. The gift of a silver cup had been made by Messrs. Eric, Alan and Keith Fletcher, old boys prominent in tho sports of the school, for the senior club relay races. The senior free place examinations would begin on November 20 and tho university entrance and school certificate examinations on December I. The annual cricket match with Wanganui Collegiate School would be played at Wanganui to-day and the match with Napier Boys' High School at Napier on December 15 and 16. Miss E. E. Stevens, Principal t>£ the Girls’ High School, reported a roll of 261 and uverage attendance of 247.8. The chairman reported that the breaking-up ceremonies of the Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools would be Jfcid in the Opera House on December 17 when the speaker would bo I’rofessqr J. Shelley, Canterbury College. Eurther plans and estimates in connection with the assembly hall at the Girls’ High School, were being prepared and would be submitted to the board in due course.

It was reported that the Manawatu A. and P. Association was very pleased with the assistance High School Hoys had given as junior stewards. Tho board was also interested to learn that one student had beaten all comers at the show in the fat cattle judging competition.

It was decided to set aside £2OO from incidental expenses for the purpose of books for a reference library at each of the two High Schools.
