“A Lot of Snobs"

Cabaret That Tunned Sailors From Door BUS HIDE FOR REJECTED DANCERS Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The turning away of sailors off tho Achilles from a cabaret recently was discussed at a meeting of tho Wellington City Council to-day, when Mr. P. M. Butler, who has been absent from Wellington for some weeks, asserted that the incident had given Wellington a bad name in other parts of New Zealand. He had seen that a cabaret proprietor had turned away-sailors in uniform and had found people in other cities ‘‘put us down as a lot of snobs.” The council should dissociate itself from the action of tho cabaret management.

Mr. Butler said he felt strongly about the incident. He had been a naval man, a second-class stoker, and he would not bo seen dead in some of the places that turned second-class stokers away from the doors.

_ Til e Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said, like probably most of the councillors, he felt extremely indignant about tho treatment meted out to the sailors. To show the city knew how to treat sailors, it had been arranged for two bus loads of sailors to be taken for a drive into the country. He did not think the city could bo blamed for what had happened and rather thought tho position might be altered when the sailors returned to Wellington. .. .

Mr. Butler raised the question -of the jurisdiction of tho council over tho license of a cabaret. ‘‘l think the city solicitor should go into the point to see if the council can cancel the license of that cabaret,” he said. The Mayor said he had intended asking the city solicitor to investigate that aspect, and that could be done.
