Boxing Notes

(By “Left Jab.”)

A busy time was experienced at the conclusion of the Nichol-do Gans fistic display on Thursday evening last, when tho president, secretary and Mr. G. G. Hill wero “eyes out,” rushing Here, there and everywhere iu their efforts to finalise tho amateur scraps in connection with the preliminary flutters to the de Gans-Reeve conflict on Saturday next. The trouble and anxiety arose over the fact that Dannevirke and Hawora are holding boxing tournaments on the same evening, and several of the belligerents who Had been engaged for the local fistic entertainment had unwittingly been booked for either Dannevirke or Hawera. However, after a lot of bother and straightening out matters were satisfactorily arranged, and everything in the fistic garden is, at time of writing, blooming. Local boys for whom engagements have been fixed aro H. Bradbury, Hirst and Jensen. The trio of local officials were exceedingly fortunate in matching G. Cook (Feilding) and N. Hastings (Palmerston North) for a three twominuto rounds encounter. These boys are midgets and I can say without the slightest hesitation that I have seen nothing like them in New Zealand. contest they put on at Palmerston North on Thursday evening last simply staggered the house, and it was undoubtedly tho star bout of tho evening. ,lt was a ding-dong go from start to finish, hard and, for youngsters, iterce slugging, with a combination of dash, cleverness, science and elusiveness. These boys are amazingly good and arc well worth seeing. They are exceedingly well matched, and it is hard to say which is the better of the two. On Thursday evening last Hastings secured a very narrow decision. Matters in connection with the approaching big fight are to be finalised to-morrow afternoon, when the executive is to meet. Opinion on tho professional bout would appear to be very evenly divided, but one thing is absolutely certain: Harold Reeve will make the negro fight every minute of every round. It should be a groat contest, with the likelihood of a knock-out happening along at any moment. Harold, who is iu splendid fettle,- is quietly confident. Expect to see somo fireworks, and, incidentally, a few thrills. Jack McMahon and Harold Reeve are definitely fixed to fight on November 14.
