The latest fishing story is that of a youthful angler who, at the opening of the season on Thursday last, inquirod of the contractor excavating for tho new water main in Fitzherbcrt avenue: “Have you found any worms yet, mister!’’ Mr. T. To see what would happen a resident of Palmerston North on (Saturday replaced a blackbird’s nest with young in it, with a thrush’s nest with eggs. Mrs. Blackbird is sedately setting again unaware of the surprise that awaits her. <4> <t> <£> <!> Owing to bad weather conditions pre vailing on (Saturday tho Central Carnival committee decided to postpone >uo carnival procession and combined spoils meeting until Saturday next. The cycling and national uunciug entries are very big. These two events com oiued with tne trotting oxhibitions and baud displays, should prove a; very attractive programme. V <«> <£> ‘S' A re-unioa of the Palmerston North and suburban headmasters was held at the residence of Mr. 0. 0. Hills, •‘Hillcote,'' To Wauaka road, Awapuui, last week. This is the second reunion held to foster the goodfellowship existing amongst tho xiaternity. Those present were: Messrs. E. Hary, H. W. Jackson, A. W. Thompson, W. a. Bwinbourn, L J. Plank, M. E. McEwen, E. 0. Campbell and E. A. Beurle. <*> <» <S> | SOnly a little daunted by tho persistent rain, members of the Northern Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club held their ohicial opening of the season on (Saturday afternoon. The speakers were Messrs. 0. N. Kabone (president -of the club), J. A. Nash (president of !>•- Mauawalu Bowling Centre), L. It. Bryant, of Nelson (a foundation member and a life member after being president for a number of years), and the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford), who declared the seuson open. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies.
Ia the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday, when Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., was ou the bench, George Frederick William fisher, aged 23, a farm labourer, was charged with the theft, on September 17, at itongotca, of a pair of gum boots and a shirt, of a total value of £l, the property of S. W. Hughes. Accused pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Dickerdike, who appeared for the police, stated that the goods were missing when accused left his employer’s place. The Magistrate convicted accused and ordered him to come up for sentence if called upon within sis months,
