First Woman to Preside Over College Board
MISS B. CARNACHAN. The first woman to fill the office of ;■ chairman of a technical college board in New Zealand, Miss B. E. Carnachan was last week elected to the chair oi the board of managers of the Seddon Memorial Technical College. The appointment was proposed by Mrs. F. Mcßride, who said that Miss Carnachan had the necessary qualifications for the position as in 1935 she was president of tho National Council of Women. She was as capable of filling the position as was a man. The nomination was seconded by Miss Alice Basten. There being no other nominations Miss Carnachan was accmrea elected. Miss Carnachan thanked the members for the confidence they had shown in her and said that 3ho would do her utmost to promoto the interests of the college during her term of office. She was particularly grateful to the men members of the board, because she realised that there was a barrier for women to break down. Mr. S. Vella was elected vice-chairman.
