Stanway

From Our Own CTorresnondent. Meeting of Householders. A meeting convened by the Stanway School Committee, was held in the local hall on Monday evening, September 2S, to discuss the matter of consolidated schools. There was a large attendance of householders. There were present Mr. McMurtrlo (chief inspector) and Mr. Bolton (secretary of the Wanganui Education Board). Apologies were received from Messrs. Hornblow and. Batchelor, members of the Wanganui Education Board, owing to unavoidable absence. Mr. E. Christian, chairman of the Stanway School Committee, was in tho chair. He outlined the business of the evening and then introduced Messrs. McMurtiro and Bolton. During his very interesting talk, Mr. McMurtrie pointed out the advantages of consolidation, which included fuller social life for children, wider curriculum and better methods and less Inefficiency due to movement in the teaching staffs. In concluding Mr. McMurtrie urged those present to “consider the question from the child’s point of view.” Mr. Bolton then spoke. Apologies .were read from Messrs. Hornblow and J. Batchelar. Mr. Bolton endorsed Mr. McMurtrie's remarks, emphasising points of facilities more advantageous in larger schools. Time, was then set aside for questions, Mr. Bolton endeavouring ro enlighten all tiiose who questioned very much the advisability of altering the present method of teaching in the district. Mr. T. . Marshall proposed: “That the present method of educating the children in the Stanway district bo continued with.” A vote taken on this question showed tho majority in favour of the present method being continued. The meeting was thus concluded. Surprise Party.

A number of people visited Manson estate, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cole, on Friday evening last when the jolliest of ; surprise parties eventuated. Community singing, competitions and games whiled away a very happy evening. Winners of the various competitions were Miss Esme McLennan and Messrs. S. Maxwe.ll, S>. Gledhill and K. Marshall. Among the number present were Mr. and Mrs. C. Callingham, Misses Mavis and Esme McLennan, Nga'ere, Nola and Zena Jefferies, Dorothy Callingham, Joyce Dunstan, Jean McDowall and Messrs. S. T„ G. and K. Marshall, S. Gledhill. S. Maxwell, D. Humphries, D. Bowater, R. Turner, R. Grantham (Halcombe), L. Faulding (Halcombe) and lan Cole and R. Quarrie. Personal. Misses Ilona and Jean Groves are spending a few days in Fending.
