" As Goes Maine So Goes the Nation ”

State Election To-day Eagerly Awaited

WILL REPUBLICANS SHOW ADVANCE?

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.

Received Sunday, 9.10 p.m. NEW YORK, Sept. 12,

The State election campaign in Maine which will culminate ou Monday when 300,000 voters are expected to go to the polls, reached its peak to-night with an address at Portland by Governor Laudon, the .Republican Presidential nominee. It was the strongest and most vigorous attack the Republican leader has yet made on tho New Deal and covered the alleged international as well as the' national mistakes of tho Roosevelt Administration. On the domestic side the Governor contended the N.R.A., A.A.A., and other New Deal agencies comprised planned economy which was incompatible with a democratic Government and on the foreign policy he alleged President Roosevelt had failed to seize the great opportunity and lead the way to world peace and economic security when he “turned his back" on the London Economic Conference, and a chance to turn the world trend from economic nationalism and war was lost.

Although no national issues are involved in the Maine elections for historical reasons they are of tremendous psychological importance since it is the .j iy ytate holding its elections in advance of the national eloctions. The proverb has arisen: “As goes Maine so goes tho nation," although this has often not been tho case.

The Governor and three Congressmen will be elected with the Republicans considered to bo the likely victors and the Democrats trying to minimise their majorities and attempting to counteract the Republican trend. The Democrats revealed that some dozen wealthy individuals, including several members of the Dupont and Rockfeller families, have donated in excess of 50,000 dollars for the Republican campaign although none are resident in that State.
