Driving Our Shipping Off The Seas

SOMETHING WILL HAVE TO BE DONE, SAYS MINISTER

"We cannot stand by and watch our shipping being driven off the seas by subsidised competition of other countries without striving to protect it,” said the Minister of Marine, Hon P. Fraser at the New Zealand Company of Master Mariners’ social evening on Saturday night. "The question to be considered is whether British shipping in the Pacific can be carried on against American competition without some form of subsidy. It would be futile to allow a company to put into service an expensive ship on the Tasman run and then allow the company to battle out the trade between Auckland and the United States against subsidised competition without giving it some assistance. "What sort of help should be given is another matter, but I am quite certain everyone in the community realise that New Zealand is to continue as a maritime country some assistance will have to be given to our shipping,” concluded Mr. Fraser.
