CANTERBURY STAKES WON BY ARACHNE IN RECORD TIME.

At the Canterbury Park races, Billy Boy, who last year was regarded as one of the most promising staying two-year-olds, but whose recent form has been rather unsatisfactory, rehabilitated himself by scoring handsomely in the Guineas and he is now entitled to consideration us a contender for tho Derby, Gustos ran ungenerously throughout and repeatedly tried to get off the course. Cuddle and Arachne gave magnificent performances in tho Stakes and, although the latter won, the honours were possibly with Cuddle, who hesitated at (he start and made up several lengths in the comparatively short straight. Arachne jumped out first and led all tho way. Stretto, having his first run in Sydney, showed considerable pace. Cyril liau also had his first run iu Sydney and performed creditably in running second in the Park Stakes. The New Zealand-bred Stalin jumped out first from tho inside position, Cyrillian beiDg ridden hard from the extreme outside to join him, the pair fighting out a great finish. In the third division of the Park Stakes the useful threo-ycar-old filly, Matchless, fell and sustained injuries necessitating her destruction. Her rider, Harper, broke his collarbone and was carried from the courso suffering from concussion. When Matchless fell Ihe jockey, Wallace, was thrown from another horse and taken to the casualty room suffering from shock. j ? Tho Sydney rider, A. R. Ellis, who won the Flying Handicap on Thebez was suspended for a month for interference with Siren; who was unplaced. Results:— PARK STAKES, 6 furlongs. First Division. STALIN, 7.7 (W. Linklet and Royal Helena were unplaced iu the second division of the Phrk Stakes and Kow Tow unplaced in the third division. Omarero and Padishah were unplaced in the Flying Handicap. Golden Treasure was second in the September Handicap. Golden Gato and Distinguished were unplaced in the Ashbury Handicap.

The latter was cut out shortly after the start but finished gallantly. Marabou showed a return to form, finishing at a great gait after being last entering tho straight. It has been announced that Charles Fox will not start ia the Epsom. Couandale, who has admirers as a Melbourne Cup candidate, put up a splendid performance to win the V arriston Handicap for three-year olds, despite a somewhat difficult passage. Keith Voitre piloted Auric’s Star to victory iu the Doona Trial. Results:— WARE IST AN HANDICAP, of £500; for 3-year-olds; 1 mile. OONANDALE, 5.2 (Percivil) .... 1 First Boongarry, 7.12 (Bourke) .. * Illawarra, 8.0 (Tomison) 4 -Dead heat for second. Fourteen started. Length. Time, 1.391. Ten started, including Prince Quex (fourth), Riddle (eighth). Marabou was one and a-half lengths behind the dead-heaters. Time, 1.51-]-. HEATHEELIE HANDICAP, U miles.
