Quiet Morning at Awapuni

COURSE HEAVY AND LITTLE FAST WORK. DEATH OF JOVIAL PRINCE. Although the weather conditions were better than earlier in the week, the track was very heavy and several of tho trainers preferred a programme of paee work on the plough to fast work on the course proper. The course proper was available, however, and the flags were over near the outside fence. St. Clara (W. E. l’iuc) was sent along over tiirco furlongs on tho plough, being' clocked to cover tho concluding two iu 27. The plpugh had surface water in places, but the going might easily have been worse. St. Clara has improved considerably since she arrived at W. Pine’s stable and she has built up into a solid-looking mare. Dungarvan (W. 13. Pine), who appears to bo in tho pink of condition, was sprinted half a mile on tho plough, taking 52 3-ssec. Though he is inclined to be lazy in his track work, his effort was satisfactory in view of approaching engagements.

Dawning Light (E. Feasey), a prospective Wanganui Guineas candidate, hit out very freely over half a mile, being clocked to cut tho last three furlongs out iu 40 4-ssec. Cloudy Bay (Feasey), another Awapuni candidate for Wanganui, was given a work-out over a round ou tho plough, the last six furlongs being put behind in a fraction better than 1.21. Cloudy Bay moved attractively and she should bo in good nick for Wanganui, where, however, sho will meet pretty stiff opposition.

Among those worked on tho course proper were Finnesko (Eae) and Laggard (B. Browne). They hopped away short of the five and were timed to run the last three in 43scc. They slowed up a bit over the concluding stages, the going being very heavy, but Finnesko was having tho better of it when the post was reached. Taumau (C. Thomson) had the better of Lady Ina (M. If. Nicol) at tho close of a five-furlong flutter on the course proper, being clocked to complete the distance in 1-11. Lady Ina, the halfsister of Lady Fingers, is now- a six-vcar-old, and she is still in the rough.

The Palmerston North sportsman, Mr Norman Blackmore, had some very bad luck last week when tho promising thrco-ycar-old, Jovial Prince, died as a result of inflammation of tho stomach. Jovial Prince’s two-year-old form was moderate, but on occasions it was good enough to indicate better things to come. He was being given plenty of time to develop and his trainer, L. A. Pine, had him looking a picture before tho trouble set in.
