St. Patrick's Tennis Club

ANNUAL EEPOET POE FAST SEASON

Following is the annual report of St. Patrick’s Tennis Club:—

The past season lias been ond of the most successful for a number of years. There was a slight increase in membership, while a much 'higher standard of play was noticeable, due largely to tho club’s affiliation and 'participation in the Manawatu Association’s Saturday competition. Owing to tho heavy expenditure incurred due to tho storm, the bank balance has fallen considerably, but the club’s linanccs aro still in a very healthy condition, with a credit balance remaining of practically £lO.

This was the second year of the club’s participation in the local association matches and tho two teams entered (both in the B grade) acquitted themselves very well, the A team going through tho season without a defeat, to win their section of tho competition. Several members entered for the local residential competitions, two members, Misses N. and U. Hickey, being successful in winning the ladies’ handicap doubles. Mrs C. Lemon, also of our club had the honour of representing Manawatu as a member of tho A grade representative team. In the competition conducted by the New Zealand Catholic Lawn Tennis Association, amongst teams in the WanganuiManawatu district one team was entered. Matches being played against teams from Wanganui, Levin and Feilding. Our team was successful in winning the competition. During the year a team from the Hastings Club was entertained while wo also paid a visit for the first timo to St. Anne’s, Newtown. Both these visits are to be returned during the coming season.

The club also had an annual dance and presentation of trophies which was very successful. Executivo officers of the N.Z. Catholic Lawn Tennis Association journeyed from Wellington for this function and to present tho trophy. During tho year, our popular and euergetie secretary Mr J. Murphy, found it necessary owing to pressure of business to relinquish his duties and the committee desire to record its appreciation of his long and capable service. Miss N. Hickey who was elected in his place proved a ' very efficient substitute.

As the courts were unplayable for some time due to the storm damage, the club’s handicap events were not played, but the championship events resulted as follows: Ladies’ singles championship, Miss N. Hickey; ladies' doubles championship, Misses N. Hickey and C. Bearslcy; Men’s singles championship, Mr P. Cope; men’s doubles championship, Messrs L. A. Smith and J. P. Lemon; mixed doubles, Miss N. Hickey and Mr L. A. Smith. We tako this opportunity of welcoming our esteemed president on his return from an extensive trip to Europe. Your committee has to report the loss, through transfer, of several members of tho club. Miss W. yherriff. who was a prominent player as well as an executive officer, Air P. Cope who has been a leading'player in the club for a number of years, Mr J. Miers a very capable player and a member of the A team and Mr J. Delauy an executive officer for three years. Wo offer our congratulations to theso members on their advancement in their respective position. The committee desires to express its thanks to the Sisters of Mercy, to the president, ltev. Father P.
