Women’s Institutes
MANGAMAIRE
The monthly meeting of tho Mangamaire Women’s Institute was held on August 5. The president, Mrs L. Ward, presided over a good attendance. After the minutes had been read and all business dealt with, Miss Hunt gave an interesting demonstration on painting organdie throw overs. A guessing competition, jumbled names of birds, was won by Miss Timmins. A dainty afternoon tea was then served by the hostesses, after which the president made a presentation to tho former president, Mrs. Ralph, who has left the district. Several members spoko wishing Mrs Ralph the best of luck in her new home. The monthly competition, best knitted tea cosy, was won by Miss Moriarty, Mrs L. Ward being placed second.
WAITUNA WEST
The August meeting was held on the 13th inst. Mrs Williamson presiding over a good attendance of members. The winners of the doll competition were Mrs Stokes 1 and 3 and Mrs Pollard 2, while in tho competition for the prettiest string of beads, Mrs Wovil was first and Mrs Stokes second and third. These articles are to be donated to tho Christmas tree. Members were requested to bring a small article or toy next month and following months, for the Christmas tree in December. The demonstration next month will bo on beaten brass work to be given by Mrs Stone and tho competitions will be for the best article or articles knitted from one hank of knitting silk and the best flower from the garden. There is also to be a display of needlework pictures and tapestry and members were urged to try and bring something for this. It was agreed to hold over the competition for the prettiest lamp shade till October. During the afternoon two amusing competitions, arranged by Mrs Stone, were won by Miss Lucas and Mrs Stokes, each being presented with a small trophy. An invitation has been received from Makino Women’s Institute to all members of Waituna to be present at their birthday celebrations which commence at 1.30 p.m. in the Makino hall on Tuesday, September I. The hostesses for the meeting were Mrs R. Northcott, Miss M. Halford and Mrs Meads while those apointed for next month are Mrs Northcott, Mrs and Miss Old and Mrs Pollard.
