Watch the Clock
LATE FOR,* APPOINTMENTS
It is amusing to stand under the clock on a corner where many meetings take place, states an exchange. You will notice what a number of people are late for appointments. Those wno are waiting begin to cast anxious looks at the time and pace restlessly up and down until the guilty ones come hurrying up with a voluolo explanation of their lateness. For wo always have an explanation, though sometimes it is not a very good one. Of course we canuot guard against unforseeu circums'anees, and sometimes there is a legitimate excuse for the delay, but mostly, it is just pure carelessness. People are too lazy to make that extra effort and too inconsiderate to bother .about tho trouble they cause their friends. Women are supposed to be the worst offenders, and I am afraid the charge is a true one. Yet it is so easy to plan the day’s work in such a fashion that you can prevent the loss of those few important minutes. Everything we do should have system and order behind it if we are to make a success of our lives, and an unpunctual woman is usually a careless one into the bargain. Some women seem to think that lateness enhances their value, especially when they are meeting men friends. It doesn’t do, they say, to bo hanging round waiting for them: it looks as though they are over-eager for the meeting. Nothing is further from the truth. A man hates to be kept waiting, and is inclined to draw unfavourable conclusions about the character of. a person who is never on time. He thinks that carelessness in small things is an indication of inefficiency in bigger ones. Tt has been said that you can always toll a woman’s age by nolinc her'- lefe she is for an appointment, and if this is so, some of us must be veritable grandmothers!
