Hokowhitu School Committee Meeting

GOOD SPORTS RECORD SHOWN Tho monthly meeting of tho Hokowhitu school committee was held on Monday evening when Mr H. Shields presided and those present wero Messrs S. Collier, E. Olds, V. E. Crowther, G. Melville, J. H. McKenzie, W. E.'Cooper and L. J. Plank. The acting headmaster Mr C. Haydon in his report stated that tho school activities for the month had just ended. The present roll stood at 322 whilst tho average for the month was 322.8, there being an attendance of 290.5.' The annual school fancy dress ball was held on July 17 last and proved a successful function. On July 27 Inspectors McMurtrie, Crosly and Merrington paid their visit of inspection at tho school. Arbor Bay was celebrated on August 5 when Mr P. Black, City Curator addressed the pupils of the senior classes on the beauty and value of trees and the need for their preservation after which the pupils under his guidance planted a pepper tree. As in recent years the Kia Toa football club donated a miniature cup for presentation to the most improved all round player of Rugby in the school for tho season. A circular was received from the board stating that in view of the epidemic of last quarter tho average attendance for the term had been based on 95 per cent, of the average roll, placing it at 301 instead of 276.7 as shown in the register. In the Hold of sport the school had been very successful this year. The inter schools’ football shield which was competed for each year by tho various town schools had been won by the senior football team and one of the boys, lan Taylor had been selected for the primary representatives touring Wellington this month. The girls had also been successful in the basket-ball games and were the winners on this side of the lino for the Senior Girls’ Basketball Cup. They had yet to play off the final against Convent, the winners of the other side of the line and if again successful they would become holders of the cup for the season. A note of thanks was awarded Mr Hay don and his staff in appreciation of the splendid way in which the children were trained for their dances at the annual ball. Appreciation of the success both the boys and girls achieved in the field of sport was also expressed. It was decided to present engraved miniatures of the Molly Franks, Trevor. Burns and Kia Toa- cups to the various winners at the. breaking • up ceremony. It was decided, to forward a letter to Mr P. Black " thanking him for his services on Arbor day. A letter was received from the Education Board statiug that it would advance a subsidy of 16s Sd for £2 IDs worth of library books purchased l'or use during school hours. Mr Haydon was authorised to investigate the mat ter. A note of thanks was accorded the Kia Toa football club for their donation of the football cup.
