;.v » ''■ . CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National Meeting opened today. The weather was gloriously fine and the attendance very large. The track was in good order and the totalisator investments amounted to £53,317 (win £21,695 10s, place £31,621 10s), as compared with £11,814 10$ on the opening day last year. Results: —

At the sis furlongs Tho Smugglor and John Charles held command, but crossing tho top Havering ran into second place to follow Tho Smuggler into the straight with John Charles and Saltspray nest. Havering then drew out to win by three lengths from Saltspray with Santoft a neck away third. Redolent was fourth. Time, 3.20 4-5. PAPARUA HANDICAP, of £200; 6 furlongs. 7-7 EMISSARY, 9.9 (B. H. When the field had. settled down Emissary and Dollar Bill were most prominent and on to tho course proper tho leaders were Emissary, Dollar Bill, Knockfin and Pukeko. Emissary won by a length from Pukeko with Knockfin two longths away. Gaysomo was fourth. Time, 1.13.

Kennels, doublo for R'oyston and Burglar to have' charge crossing the top. Itoyston and Money Mine led to the last fence front Burglar and Kao,kaoroa. When the field had settled down tk6 leaders were Grey Honour, Araboa, Call Money, Owlsgieam, Rose of Tralee and Fiord. Turning for home those most prominent were Grey Honour, Araboa, Call Money, Owlsgieam, Roso of Tralee, Matoru and Fiord. In the run home Fiord did best to win by half a length from Matoru with Sovereign Lady two lengths away. Grey Honour was fourth. Time, 1.28 4-5. Diamond Destroyed. The Grand National Steeplechase was marrod by an unfortunate mishap to the favourite, Diamond, who, after leading for sis furlongs, made two bad jumps and went back to a rear position. Ho scrambled over tho carriage p> ddock brush at the end of a circuit, but then collapsed with a broken back and was destroyed. WEIGHTS FOR TO-MORROW.

Streamline had charge going out of the straight followed by Clarion Call, Courtyard, Journet, Jolly Beggar and Silk Sox. Going along tho back, Streamline and Silk Sox were the leaders, and crossing the top they were still in command. Streamline, Silk Sox, Journet and Clarion Call was the order entering the straight and Silk Sox finished better and beat Streamline by a length with Journet three lengths away third. Punchestown lost his rider at tho sod wall entering tho back for Royal Limond to take charge after jumping tho Kennels doublo the last time. Ho was followed across tho top by High Speed, Manawatu, Forest Glow and Billy Boy. The order was tho same to tho last fence, whero Royal Limond drew away to win by oight lengths from Billy Boy with High Speed a length further away. Manawatu was fourth. Time, 7.9 1-5.
