Businessmen Confer
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE meeting. Mr A. J. Graham presided at a meeting of the council of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce last evening. Also present were Messrs H. E. Edmunds, J. H. Stevens, P. Cousins, if. H. Oram, A. P. Stuart, F. G. Opie. There were several apologies. The Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) advised that he regretted ho would be unable to accept an invitation to attend the annual dinner, on account of the pressure of official duties, if the function was held in the near future. If it occurred later in the year, he might possibly be able to attend. The matter was left to the president and secretary to fix a date after the adjournment of Parliament, to suit the convenience of the Prime Minister, if possible. The town clerk advised that renumbering of houses would commence at an early date. —Gratification -was expressed at this decision. The Hawke’s pay A. and P. Society asked support for a resolution it had sent to the Prime Minister, as follows : “That this society views with alarm that our forests are a fast diminishing quantity and that the Government be urged to prohibit further export of New Zealand timbers and to take steps to conserve what little remains.” The matter was referred to Mr E. E. Townshend for a report. The Chief Postmaster advised that, as from July 18 the telegraph attendance at all chief offices was reduced from 9 p.m. to 8 p.m.,on Saturdays.
