P.N. Literary and Debating Society

LAST NIGHT’S PROCEEDINGS

The Palmerston North; Literary and Debating Society held its weekly meeting last evening. There was a splendid attendance of members and the first part of the programme was taken up with biographical speeches. The speakers were: —Mr. T. Parlane, "Henri Christophe"; Mr. B. G. Cox, "Mr. Justice Alpers”; Miss Bowling, "Te Rauparaha"; Mr. R. Homblow, "C. Edmund Kells"; Mr. R. Allison, "A Night in Hamburg." The second part of the programme was given over to the main?debate: — "That compulsory unionism is in the best interests of New Zealand." Those taking part were:—Mr. R. Cox, Mr. W. McArley, Mis 3 Wilson; Mr. G. Brown, Mr. M. Davidson, Miss Spencer. Mr. Brown and Mr. McArley were the leaders of their respective sides. A win was scored by the negative by a good margin, and the Piccadilly medal was awarded to Miss Spencer for the best effort of the evening. On September 1 it is proposed to hold a series of challenge debates and the following challenges were made and accepted:—"That urban rating is inequitable"; "That the Legislative Council should be abolished”; "That the Government should authorise compulsory sterilisation of the unfit"; "That Euthanasia bo instituted in New Zealand." Mr. H. G. Mills fulfilled the duties of adjudicator in a most capable manner and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The visitors were wfelcomed by the chairman before bringing a most enjoyable evening to a close.
