Rangitikei River Protection Work

GOVERNMENT AID TO BE SOUGHT The question of co-operation between the Manawatu and tlie Rangitikei County Councils for tko protection of the banks of the ltangitikei river was mentioned at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council by Cr. J. H. Perrett. He reported that hp had attended a meeting of the settlers of the county affected when Mr. A. R. Mair Rangitikei county engineer, had outlined the position regarding the erosion that was taking place. A comprehensive scheme of river protection had been outlined and the suggestion offered that a grant from unemployment funds should be made to enable the work to be undertaken. It had been agreed that the chairmen of tho respective councils, together with interested settlers, should proceed to Wellington to wait on the Minister of Public Works with a view to obtaining linancial assistance for the project. In addition to this the settlers had agreed to commence tree-planting as a step towards protecting tho river bank.
