MRS ALICE MARGARET JOHNSTON.

Thero passed away in a privato hospital ia Palmerston North on Wednesday, Mrs Alice Margaret Johnston, wife of Mr J. Goring Johnston, of Tamumu, Hawke’s Bay. Mrs Johnston’s doath removes ono who will be remembered by many associated with Palmerston North in former years, the family home at Awapuni having been widely known. The garden there was ono of Mrs Johnston’s chief joys, and it was of an, exceptionally high standard. Mrs Johnston’s parents were the late Mr and Mrs Duncan Cameron, of "Glen Dhu,” Wairarapa, and she was married in Wellington in 1897. Sho and her husband lived at Castlepoint, Wairarapa, but subsequently took up their residence in Wellington, later coming to Palmerston North, where their home, "Oakhurst, ” Awapuni, was well-known. This line building was destroyed by fire several years ago, after the family had left to reside at Tamumu. Mrs Johnston is survived by her husband and three sous and two daughters. The sons are Captain J. Goring Johnston (Tamumu) and Messrs William Johnston (Tamumu) and Walter Johnston (Victoria College, Wellington), and tho daughters and Mrs G. V. Gladstone (now visiting Tamumu), -wife of Lieutenant-Commander Gladstone, of England, and Mrs Ralph Lowry (Taihapo). The Misses Cameron (Batt street, Palmerston North) and Mrs C. Kebbeil (Alfredton, Wairarapa) are sisters, and Mr J. Cameron (Hamilton) is a brother.

The funeral was held yesterday, Requiem Mass being celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, Broadway, after which the cortege proceeded to the Palmerston North cemetery. Tho pallbearers were Captain Johnston and Messrs William Johnston, Walter Johnston, R. Lowrj-, R. Kebbeil and S. Johnston (Feilding). MRS MARY THERESA TASKER.

Deep regret will be felt by her wide circle of friends at the -doath, which occurred on Thursday, of Mrs Mary Theresa Tasker, the wife of Mr Frederick John Tasker, of 7 Langston Avenue, very old residents of Palmerston North. The interment tpolc place at the Feilding cemetery on Friday afternoon, Rev. F.; 0. Ball officiating.

Born in Westminster, London, in 1567, the late Mrs Tasker came to New Zealand 62 years ago in the. ship Douglas with her parents, the late Sir and Mrs J. W. Wells. They settled on

a block of land which tho family still hold at Makino. The late Mrs Taskof was tho second wife of Mr Tasker. They wero married in 1595 in Wanganui, whero her husband conducted tho Albion Hotel until IS9S, when he eamo to Palmerston North,, subsequently becoming licensee of tho Clarendon and Cafe do Paris hotels. Mr Tasker Tctired from tho licensing trade in 1905, and except for a period in Wellington, has since resided at this centre, whero ho is a wellknown member of tho Palmerston North Bowling Club, of which he was formerly president and secretary. Mr and the late Mrs Tasker havo made sovcral trips to England. There was no family of tho marriage, tho late Mrs Tasker being survived by her husband, to whom every sympathy will bo extended, three sisters and three brothers. Sisters aro Mesdames C. Stanford (Feilding), P. McKay (Feilding) and J. Scott (Christchurch). Brothers are Messrs G. Wells (Feilding), C. A. Wells (AVellington), and J. Wells (Feilding). 7.
