POTATOES TO SOUTH AMERICA The likelihood of a 2000-ton shipment of South Island potatoes to Montevideo, in Uruguay, South America, is the feature of the produce market this week. The shipment is practically fixed, and the potatoes will be crated, to stand a 6000-mile voyage around Cape Horn. The question of payment is causing a hold-up in reaching finality. New Zealand merchants are asking for payment f.0.b.; Montevideo wishes to pay c.i.f. Should the shipment eventuate it will make a big clearance. The southern market is at present in a state of suspense and quotations are irregular. During the week southern potatoes have been selling ex local merchants' stores at Ss 9d to 9s 3d, and locallygrown are now all gone to consumption. ONIONS.—Ex store local merchants, Ss Gd a ewt. Demand slow. Pukekohe continues to ship onions at Ss 6d ewt. f.o.b. Some local growers are reported holding fair supplies of brown Spanish, which they anticipate will yield a good return next month. SEED POTATOES. —It is considered in some quarters that the high price of good seed potatoes will deter planting in the North Island next season. FERTILISERS. Negotiations are now proceeding between the manufacturers and the Government as to a renewal of the subsidy for the coming twelve mouths. There is some question as to whether there will be a standard price arranged for the whole of tho North Island. There is little to report iu other lines this week.
