On account of the recent rains and floods, highway No. 68 is again called upon to carry the 'whole of the through traffic which proves it to be the only allweather route. Settlers in the Fitzherbert riding are at a loss to know why this highway has not been included in the routes to be taken over by the Government seeing that it is called upon to carry the whole of the foreign traffic at flood time. This places a very unfair burden on rate payers, as they have to meet the cost of maintenance which should be a national burden. The monthly meeting of the school

committee was held on Monday last. Mr. T. Lynch presided and others present were Mr. White (head teacher), Messrs. Crawford (secretary), Gilliland, Collis and Beckett. Barrett, relieving teacher, and it was decided to write her a letter of appreciation. Miss Tottman has vey capably filled the assistant's position. The secretary read a letter from the board recognising the extensive improvements carried out on their grounds

and complimenting the committee on the general conditions at the school. It was left in the chairman's hands to go into cost of erecting a new front fence. Mr. Lange visited the school mangel plot and recommended vegetable plots for competition next year, which tho committee thinks will be satisfactory. Mr. Terry Davies, Pukehamoamoa, Hawke’s Bay, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. T. Lynch for show week. Mr. D. J. Lynch, who has been holidaymaking in Rotorua, Cambridge and Waitomo' Caves, has returned home.
