Hollywood BEAUTY SECRETS

PBEPAEING THE FACE FOB MAKE-UP Knowing how to apply make-up properly is a significant accomplishment. Each adroitly arched eyebrow, every deftly tinted cheek speaks eloquently of its fair owner’s artistry. But, in emphasising the technique of applying make-up, perhaps we have neglected the importance of preparing the face to receive it. Wo mean more than mere care of the skin; wo mean the ritual which immediately precedes going into conference with your powder, rouge, lipstick, and so on.

Since we mentioned skin care, lets take a moment to discuss skin cleanliness. Consider this an absolute maxim of make-up; ‘’No skin can make-up perfectly which is not kept scrupulously clean.” Many stars have learned tnis by bitter experience. In a clean skin the pores are fine, tissue is firm and the texture silky. Do you suppose Ginger Itogers could take a perfect make-up if she did not have such a skin? Emphatically no!

Therefore, your first consideration in preparing your face for make-up is maintaining a clean skin. How often you must use a cleansing cream depends on your own skin and its environment. If vou live in an environment wnich tends to bo dusty or smoky, your pores will clog up rapidly. In this respect you city dwellers have the worst of it. Then again, if your skin is oily, it will take more frequent washings with soap and water, while dry skins will not react favourably to this kind of treatment.

Let’s take a peek at a normal-skinned young lady who knows how to make sure that her skin will always retain make-up perfectly. At night she takes plenty of timo to remove all her makeup with cleansing cream. Taking it on tr.e tips of the fingers in small dabs, she pats it smartly over her entire face. That means the forehead, neck . . . and even the ears. Then she busies herself with brushing her teeth or filing her finger-nails, while she gives the cream a chance to penetrate deep into the pores and float out "the tiny, hidden impurities.

After a few minutes, Miss Normal Skin takes up her towel or a few soft tissues and begins wiping the skin clean. Does she complete her task with five or six long strokes across the face? Again .an emphatic “no!’’—cleansing cream

will never come off completely this way. She must use many short, firm strokes, covering just a small area at a time.

If Miss Normal Skin has found that she can “take” it, now is a logical time for an old-fashioned washing with a good mild facial soap and lukewarm water. Perhaps this will only be possible two or three times a week, but that depends on each individual skin. If you find that it makes your face feel drawn or tender, cut down the number of washings. When she awakens in the morning, Miss Normal Skin knows that it is also necessary to waken her skin. This calls for a mild but invigorating skin freshener. She splashes the exhiliarating tonic on her face and revel 3in its cool fragrance. To increase its stimulating effect and facilitate drying, she fans her face with a towel.

Now comes the most important, yet the most neglected principle of all. Beforo the face is touched with a single bit of make-up it must be absolutely dry if the skin is moist or oily, face powder

will cake. Our Miss Normal Skin dries her face thoroughly and it is ready “to have and to hold’' a perfect makeup. Of course, tho imaginary young lady we’ve taken as an example is just one type, but she can act as a standard from which we may deviate in each individual case. If your skin is oily, for instance, you would substitute an astringent for tho milder skin freshener. You would probably also cut down the number of treatments with cleansing cream in preference for a mild facial soap. Dry-skinned damsels, on the other hand, would almost eliminate soap and water, since it tends to wash away what little natural oil is left in the skin. Even the extremely mild skin freshener should bo used with temperance. In each and every individual case the goal is the same . . . Keep your skin clean and free from moisture or oiliness ... keep your pores fine and regular . . . and keep your skin firm and healthy. ... In other words, keep it prepared for make-up!
