WANGANUI BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING HELD

The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held at Wangnui on Wednesday. Mr E. F. Hemingway presided and there wore present Messrs J. K. Hornblow, M. H. Oram, J, S. Tingey, P. Munro, R. Dukeson, A. S. Coleman and Colonel J. H. Whyte. The architect, Mr E. R. Hodge, reported that % staTt had been made with the erection of tho extension to tho main building at the Russell street school. The porch extension at the To Arakura school had been completed with the exception of painting. This was being held up pending the removal of tho painters to this part of the district when the Russell street school is made ready. The exterior of the teacher’s residence at Stanway was being painted and the interior repapered and decorated.

I Advice wag received from tho Educai tion Department that it was prepared | to approve of a grant of £137 10s to- | ward the cost of asphalting at the Foxtion school provided that tho board or tho committee found a similar amount. A letter was received from the committee could not find the money. It was decided to ask the Public Works Department to include this work in iis schedule of school works. An application was received from the committee of the West End school for additional bicycle shed accommodation. The architect reported that the existing shed could probably be altered to accommodate more cycles. On the recommendation of the architect, it was decided to leave the matter over until a conference is held between himself and the committee.

The secretary, Mr G. N. Boulton, reported that the biennial election of board members would take place on July 15 and that nominations would close on .June 24. The retiring members were Colonel J. H. Whyte, Messrs J. S. Tingey, A. S. Coleman, P. Munro and W. T. Benefield.

A letter of appreciation was received from the committee of tho Manchester street school, Peilding, expressing its appreciation of the work done by the painters and asking that its appreciation should bo conveyed to those responsible for the work. An application was received from tho committee of tho Pohangina school for 60 feet of drain piping and 12 bags of cement in order to carry out improvements to the school grounds. The architect recommended that the pipes for drainage work, which was needed at the school, should bo provided. He recommended that the request for bags of cement to construct paths should be held over until his next visit to the school. Tho report.was adopted.
