Final Trials at Wanganui

TRACKS RATHER SOFT AFTER HEAVY RAIN i ■* (Special to “Times.") WANGANUI, Thursday. The steady rain of Wednesday and showers during the night had made the local tracks rather soft this morning for tho final fast gallops of Wanganuitrained horses, though yesterday’s wind had prevented them from getting heavy. Two or three interesting gallops wore seen on No. 1 track, Landlubber and Teddy Boy running five furlongs soon after breakfast and Velocipede and Triune getting over a similar task an hour later, after a light shower. Rayner sent his pair of rising two-year-olds, Scarf Dance and Icing, on a couple of circuits at an easy pace, spurting them up the straight each time. They are developing nicely. Spiral got through some steady work and appeared anxious to go faster. He bears a muscular appearance.

Imposture -was also given useful work on No. 2 track with her trainer in the saddle.

The rising two-year-old half-sister to Birthday Party, a filly by Arausio from Marion’s Birthday, was exercised and spurted up the straight, going as true as a gun-barrel when the pressure was applied for a brief period over the final stages.

Teddy Boy came out to jump three flights of the schooling hurdles. He is not a fast jumper, but he negotiated tho first two hurdles in the straight in 'satisfactory style. The next flight is down the back stretch opposite the five-furlong peg, and at tho time there was a bad 'shadow which prevented horso' and rider from getting a sight at the obstaclo till within a few yards of it. Teddy Boy managed to scramble over tho batten, but the effort unsteadied him, so T. Williams, who schooled him and is to have the mount on Tuesday in the May Hurdles, eased the Maori Boy gelding and sent him along to jump the first two hurdles again. This time he performed indifferently, attempting to get too high, but he did not clout tho battens. Afterwards Teddy B'oy came out with his Balgownio Hack Handicap pilot, E. McTavish, and accompanied Landlubber (T. Williams) in a spin over five furlongs. Thoy took 25 3-5 sec for tho first . quarter, 37 1-5 for three furlongs, and 1.5 3-5 for the full distance, with very little separating them at tho finish. Both were going well within themselves at the finish, and Landlubber pleased with his display. Peter Jackson and Midian again had lightweights up in a four-furlong essay, with Midian’s pilot in receipt of a fair amount of weight. They slipped over tho initial two furlongs in 25 2-5 sec, and then came homo to register 51 3-ssec for the journey, with Peter Jackson a good half-Pugth in front.

Another halt-mile effort was that for which Sanhendrin and Tupeotu were responsible. The pair also registered 25 2-ssec for the initial quarter, but the full distance took them 52see. The Chief Euler gelding had a little advantage at the start and maintained it throughout without being fully extended.

The Auckland pair, Velocipede and Triune, came out later on to run five furlongs in 1.5 3-5, after taking 26 1-5 sec for the first quarter and 39sec for the first three furlongs. They finished on terms and hit out freely throughout. Sam’s Choice, the Colossus —All Cerise gelding, which will carry Mrs S. Woodill’s colours, worked nicely, brushing home over two furlongs in a tick under 27sec.
