China's Only Hope of Resistance to Japi INSINCERE JINGOISM United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.— Copyright. SHANGHAI,-June 9. Marshal Ohang Kai-shek has appealed by telegraph to Kwantung to his loader, General Chen Chi-tang, to abandon military preparations, declaring that China’s existence must not be gambled on a monetary impulse. Independent action, he points out, is useless, and national salvation must be achieved by the concerted efforts of the entire people. Opinion at Nanking doubts the sincerity of the anti-Japanese jingoism of the Ivwangsi generals in view of their roceut close association with Japan. Business is at a standstill in Canton.
No Immediate Danger in Far East JAPANESE GARRISON REINFORCED (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 9. Lord Granborue, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, replied in tko Houso of Commons to a question on the Far Eastern situation. Ho said that, signs of tension had recently appoared in the relations of the South-western Provinces of China with tho central Government but there seemed to bo no sufficient reason at present to take an alarmist view of the position. Regarding smuggling in North China he said that conversations had continued between his Majesty’s representatives in Japan and China and the Government to which they were accredited. The Japanese Government had dispatched an official of the Foreign Ministry to examine the situation on the spot. Lord Cranborne stated that he understood that tho Japanese garrison in North China was being reinforced, but he was unablo to givo actual figures.
