JERUSALEM, May 24,
Lawlessness is increasing in tbc country districts and especially in the Nablus area which claims political leadership of Arab towns
Kaiders hidden on the hillsides are repeatedly attacking the armoured cars, troops and police, sometimes tiring volleys. The troops invariably return the lire, but the mobs’ casualties are difficult to discover as they carry off their dead and wounded.
So-called “black band” warnings have been distributed among the British troops urging them not to walk the streets if they value their lives. Arabs barricaded the streets at Nablus, throwing stones and firing from the roofs when the police attempted to clear the thoroughfares. Seaforth Highlanders arrived and fired killing two and wounding four. Another died of fright. The mob again attacked but. was dispersed. Firing from the hills continued all night.
The curfew has been introduced to prevent the rioters leaving Nablus at night time for sabotage, but crop destruction and cutting of telephone wires continues, as well as attacks on the railways despite the circulation of armoured trains. The mob attempted to raid Nurelshew prison but fled and rc-opcncd fire from the hillside.
One Seaforth Highlander is reported to have been killed and another wounded.
Five prominent agitators were arrested and others expelled from the cities and ordered to reside in distant villages. Special precautions have been taken to protect Government House owing to threats of attack on Lieut.-General Sir Arthur AVauchopc, High Commissioner.
Tulkcram malcontents ambushed a convoy of tanks at MotzabaJlcy. The soldiers replied with machine-guns and switched on the searchlights, but the attackers disappeared in the darkness.
