Fishermen in Peril

RESCUE EROM AN ICEFLOE A thrilling rescue of fishermen who were marooned on a giant icefloe a mile to sea off Lockeport, Nova Scotia, was carried out- recently. Seventeen fishermen had been forced to shelter on the icefloe to escape the blinding blizzard. They were marooned, foodless and half-frozen. They managed to signal their whereabouts to the shore. Two Government motor-boats set out to save them, the Tescue party knowing no man could live long on that ice. The boats had to fight every inch of the way through scores of small icebergs. Hours passed, and their progress was so slow that the attempt seemed hopeless. All night the crew struggled and by dawn they sighted the marooned men. Ten still had enough strength to reach the rescue boats. Suffering agonies from cold, they crawled aboard. After they had rested they joined the rescuers in trying to bring their weaker companions to safety. At last two more fishermen were dragged aboard by means of a net attached to a rope. But fivo men could not be reached. A more powerful motorboat was at last obtained and the 12 rescued were overjoyed to seo their friends brought to safety.
