The Stock Market

There is little change to report on the markets for any class of stock during the week passed. Fat stock were generally unchanged in value. Store sheep and cattle sold firmly but generally yardiugs were light. Fat Cattle. The only change of note was the decline in beef at Westfield. This is not surprising, but what was surprising, was that beef remained so long there at such a high price. The decline of 2/lOOlbs brings prime ox beef to 30/- 100. Yardings were generally normal. Fat Sheep. Apart from minor fluctuations, the market was steady and yardings were normal. An exception was at Stortford Lodge, values jumped a 1/- a head aIL round. Extra prime wethers making to 26/3, fat ewes 15/9 to 17/- and up to IS/-. This lift brings Stortford up to late Feilding values. Store Cattle Masterton’s Autumn Cattle Fair was the only offering of importance last week. Other sales report small yardings and firm prices. At Masterton, the cattle were of excellent quality. There was a largo attcndanc of buyers, both local and outside, a strong sale resulting. There was noticeable, a keen demand for good female cattle. Some lines sold:— 31 yr. R.A. steers £B/19/- and £9/5-;, 21 yr. B. A. steers £B/5/-; 11 yr. R.A. steers £6/17/6; 14 yr. R.A. heifers £l/17/- and £5/8/-; store beef cows £3/1/- and £l/12/-. Store Sheep. Generally ragged offerings of “cleanup” sheep; values firm, yardings lighter than for two months past. Stortford reports that good lambs and ewes definitely firmed in value. - FREEZING NOTES Lamb came back id lb on Monday, This makes a price of Sd. The price for the past 10 or 12 days lias been Sid. This is above London parity but competition amongst works for the small quantity of lambs available has forced prices. Works are prepared to pay 27s for wethers but can get few at this price. The local demand is absorbing the fat ewe supply. It is reported that freezing beef is worth 27s Gd lOOlbs. and chilling beef is making 32s Gd lOOlbs.
