GOLD AND SILVER MEDALS After a week of croquet consistently near tho highest standard New Zealand can produce, the annual tournament for the English gold and silver medals was concluded at New Plymouth on Tuesday. Mr. H. P. Stratton (Hastings) won the gold medal and Captain F. L. Hartnell (New Plymouth) the silver. There were 22 entries for the medals which were played for on the Yankee system in two sections. The winners of the sections were: Mr. Gibbs (Patea), no losses; Mrs. Clark (New Plymouth), one loss; Mr. Stratton (Hastings), two losses; Mrs. Morgan (Palmerston North), three losses; Captain Hartnell (New Plymouth), three losses; Mr. Jarvie (Wanganui), three losses. These players then played each other with the following results: Mr. Stratton no losses, Captain Hartnell two losses, Mr. Gibbs two losses, Mr. Jarvie two losses, Mrs. Clark four losses, Mrs. Morgau four losses. The three players with tho two losses played off for the silver medal. The gold medalist, Mr. Stratton, is the present New Zealand men’s champion and a player well known for his polished style and his nice control. He played well throughout the tourney making long breaks and peeling. A. J.

Gibbs, New Zealand open champion, wms undefeated in tho section play and made several good breaks, but did not seem as confident as usual in the postsection play. Captain Hartnell played brilliant croquet, but lost to both Stratton and Jarvie in post-section play. Jarvis also played fine croquet. Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Morgan, the only two ladies to win through to the finals, both played nice croquet. Mrs. Morgan, who is a young player, is to be congratulated on her very fine showing in going to tho finals, which she was enabled to do by her defeat of Captain Hartnell.

Tho visiting medalists were well entertained during their stay and with beautiful weather and perfect lawns they spent a most enjoyable time.
